Pot Advice please !

Hey all , has anyone cut the bottom of a pot out and let the roots grow into the ground ? I'm wanting to plant outside but would like the option to move in case if emergency?

I also would like the extra height of the plants to keep away from my dogs and also constantly battling thrips so extra height would help to spray under leaves

Grow in a 5 gal. bucket.

Would you call slices from 55 gallon drums pots? I have used these (rings) the last 2 years to get above the water. Needed them last year, not so much this year.
I have also set fabric pots on the ground and they do grow out of them (may not on smart pot brand)
