Poor root development

Have been growing for a couple of years and continue to have poor root development revealed when I pull up the plants after harvest. I'm pretty happy with the quality of the plants but the quantity not so much.
Admittedly I have poor lights, (I guess) and wonder if that alone will result in poor root development.

My guess is your grow medium doesn't have enough perlite in the mix.

Obviously without more info I'm guessing it's what Canuck said your dirt.... but if you give us some more to go on we would be able to give you more to go on
