Plant dark time importance

Now i have read a couple different opinions on this i just want to know what most people do. When my plant is on dark time what is the importance if any that the room has 100% darkness or i have read that as long as there no bright light in the room and/or no direct light to the plant then there should be no issues. Opinions?

Okay thank you thats exaclty what i was looking for a straight forward simple answer. I already have a 100% blacked out area it was just a subject that was on mind.
 
I run my lights 10/14 in flower. The flowering hormone builds up at night to produce flowers and dissipates during the day time. More dark, more bud. Shoot for 11/13 or 10/14.

More light = more energy for flower production. Doesn't make sense that you'd get more yield from less energy.

Why do autoflowers bulk up so quick? Because they're under 18-24 hours of light per day, right?

More dark, more bud? So why not grow in the dark?

Im trying to understand this, no disrespect intended.

The plant still needs to collect the energy for the resources to produce the flowering hormone. So, of course it still needs light. What I said was a scientific certainty, though.
 
Not true, there is one certainty. That science is based on uncertainty. ;)
However, i believe once the flowering cycle has been triggered and maintained below the veg cycle, it will start its biological chain reaction of hormones and behave the same no matter what cycle you throw at it (of course the amount of light you throw at it effects growth). I start outdoor growing right on the border of 12 hour day light cycle and sometimes i get a flowering plant mid veg 4 weeks in. It takes a month or so to ring her out of it but they produce some might strong bud growth before they do.
The strength of those hormones are mad in these females.
 
The uncertainty and discourse is where new ideas come from.
I run my grow on a table inside my tent. I do this because I'm too cheap I suppose to up grade my lights. I use t5 to veg, up close, flatten my plants, add CFL as they grow, etc.
Under the table, I have a cardboard box with a CFL where I maintain clone stock for the next grow.
The box is on 18/6, it definitely leaks a little light. The sisters up above are flowering like crazy on 12.5/11.5. They seem unfazed by the slight leakage.
There some variation between individual plants. I have seen hemp in gardens that varied by weeks between flower development growing in the same garden.
So much we don't know.
 
The hormones are triggered by a dark period and last a finite amount of time.
Currently a bio trigger is being developed (UK,NL and USA) which will shorten that onset time so the light period can be extended to 18hrs during flowering-exceeding the 17 1/2 hours being the most efficient amount of light time for cannabis.
This will increase yields of the final product going from 12 hours of light to 18 hours.

I find it more productive to seek information outside of the USA , to help sort out the "internet wisdom" from practical knowledge.

With respect to absolute darkness for the 12 hour interval- My timer has a red LED and I will tent-open the bottom screened windows, that allow indirect light in during the dark period with no issues at all.
We all have stories of lights being left on- or coming on during the dark period with no ill effects at all.

How do we ever know if a broken dark period caused hermies and not all the other things that we attribute to causing them?

I'm in no way suggesting anything but complete darkness- but we are taking something akin to a "stubbed toe" and making it sound like a "near death" experience.
 
You guys should look up ethylene, auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinins. As I said, the flowering hormone (ethylene) as well as auxins, I believe, are released at night and are light sensitive. This is why the flowering process is only tripped in the presence of 12/12 or lower. It has to have enough time to build up at night to produce. This is also why plants stretch at night. Auxins push the growth tips for search for light because at night, there is no light. The auxins control the stretch and, as I said, are light sensitive.

Again, this is scientific fact.

People use gaslight timing all the time with no stress or hermaphroditism. I know this concept will probably make you do a double-take, but it is used commonly enough to be a mainstream technique for veg. Gaslight timing goes 12/5.5/1/5.5. I don't really use it, personally, but a lot of well-known underground and old school growers such as RM3/RiddleM3 do.

This further demonstrate what I said about the flowering hormone needing to build up in the dark to produce.
 
Science is a wonderful. However, you are presenting your interpretation of science without siting your sources or any proof whatsoever. Please site the science that shows a 14 hour dark period will produce more or bud than a 12 hour dark period. If you can do that I will save 2 hours of electricity per day during flower so I look forward to you backing up your claim.
 
If you are looking for scientific proof of what I am saying, you should search "auxins" and "ethylene cannabis flowering hormone." The information I stated is out there in all scholarly texts about not just cannabis, but photoperiod flowering plants generally. Stop calling me misinformed or a liar because you aren't informed at all.
