I just finished What a Plant Knows: A Field Guide to the Senses (it was an NebulaHaze recommendation) that dealt scientifically but approachably this this very issue. Was a good read.
The consensus is that plants are not sentient and that anthropomorphic descriptions of plant's reaction to stimuli are misleading. But they certainly behave as living things that maximize procreation and reproduction.
