Non woven polypropylene bags, is it good enough?

Hi all,

I have to grow in pots, and I really like the idea of roots being able to grow through the bag. (even though it'll notice very fast that there's nowhere to go and will stop growing, it'll be more "free" than in a plastic pot)

So i'm looking for some bags like that in Amazon, and I can only find "non woven polypropylene" bags. 81ae7Fd1R0L._SL1500_.jpg

I pictured some jute bags to be honest, something with thick mesh thus allowing the roots to grow through the "holes" in the mesh. il_570xN.797391032_r7go.jpg?version=2.jpg


(Those jute bags are actually costlier than the others, if jute is better i'd probably end up crafting them myself from throwaway bags)


Am i wrong in seeing it that way? Are those polypropylene bags good enough? Are those what YOU use? Pretty sure the soil will breath, but the roots will not go through the bag. Afraid it might get "kind of" root bound.

Any input from users would be appreciated, thanks :)
 
Those bags will do the job just fine. The point isn't roots growing out of the bag but oxygen getting in. Since you ask, I use a 6 gallon plastic fake "woven" (i.e. lots of holes) plastic storage box from Target that I line with burlap. But I think just about anything is better for O2 transfer than plastic or glazed ceramic.
 
Oxygen will reach the roots in both bags, I'm afraid it might get root bound in those non woven bags. Thanks for the input ! About the 6 gallons, I wasn't even sure what size to take... Thinking of taking 5 gallons, can't take huge pots (i'd plant in the ground otherwise haha).
So you line up your plastic bag with burlap so that the soil is not in contact with the plastic? And the roots never poke their head through the burlap/plastic? (that's what i'm looking for haha, but maybe it doesnt change anything at all in the end! Like you said, perhaps it's all about oxygen only and they won't get root bound...)
 
My plant is in a plastic basket, not a bag. The holes in it are big enough so the coco coir could leak out, so I like it with burlap.

My understanding is that roots "self prune" when they reach an area with high oxygen. My guess is that they stop growing when they run out of water. I had a few roots poke through my storage basket/box, but not many.

I don't think you're going to get rootbound in a big bag, but I do think that the bigger the container the better.
 
Double like on the plastic basket, that's a very good idea! I might end up doing that, it'll cost me much less and have similar results. I can buy the basket in shops next door, thus seeing the size of it properly. Thanks again!
 
I think you are missing the point of fabric grow bags. In a plastic pot the roots grow out to the edge then turn and keep growing to spiral around inside the pot, a few hundred of these and no bueno. Whereas a root hits the edge of a fiber, pot tries to grow through and dead ends when it hits the air. Hence the term air-pruning. Bueno!
 
did my first couple grows in store bags. fred meyer wal mart ect . reusable bags. just run water intoo whatever bag u use an make sure it flows well through the bag.Those bags are over 5 gallons. and 99 cents.when you LST with them pop a paper clip through top for anchor points.
the root self prune an fill the bags impressivly. need a tray under them and they get tipsy when plants are big.

I got the idea from a guy on another forum and it has worked great for me on a couple of coco grows now. Good luck and have fun.

PRIMO I'm not sure I understand, because you're explaining exactly what i'm trying to say haha! I don't want the root to spin around and i'm afraid in a poly bag it will do just that, it'll hit the edge and start spiraling. Even though there's air everywhere, there's no space for it to even try to go beyond the edge... I want them to be air-pruned :D
 
Heya, you used common jute bag for your first grow, the kind you get at the grocery shop? You made sure that it was permeable by filling it with water?
From what I gathered those bags have a few "faults" that i'd like to avoid, for instance some of them are mixed with plastic, others are lined with another type of plastic etc ^^ If I could find "bio" bags like that, itd probably be fine, but here it's going to cost me an arm (yeah! Reusable bags cost you 10 bucks, because it's reusable! Compared to plastic bag that cost you 90 cents and that you're actually "forced" to buy everytime you go do your shopping. (encouraging less plastic? Liars... at least here) haha)

Yeah, I pictured something like this only! I have one already as a dustbin in my room... I just missed the concept, which you shared with me! Haha. Thanks again. Like I said, i'm pretty sure i'll end up doing that only, for a multitude of reason, its just easier/cheaper for me this year.
Next years should be in the ground, i'm not a fan of pots haha.
 
If by poly bag do you mean like smart pots, and the like? they may be woven out of a poly thread material, like your shirt is just a little thicker. They are not solid plastic that roots hit the side and spiral.
 
I can't find woven poly bags, that's the hiccup! I thought itd be easy to find around me, but no, it's only non woven :( so i asked if the roots would spiral in a non woven ^^
I'm pretty sure a woven bag would be good enough for me! If i found some... Anyway, here, it seems it's very costly. Plastic pots are the way to go... Or else go into a special hydroponic shop that sells you such bags for very costly -to be honest, my grow shop doesnt even sell woven bags! ...-

Dude... Go to amazon,enter ''smart pot" they are five bucks each for five gal. right below them is Vivosun five for 12.99. Get em fill em plant em water em. You're over thinking this.
 
I'm very low on cash :( And Amazon's smart pots are those only hahaha. I'm not stressing up, don't worry ;) I'm curious and try to get the best results, but I know for a fact it'll grow anywhere! I have access to this community who's ready to give me hints at every turn so i try to take advantage out of it ;)
