Newbie alert question....yes I tried search

I think you need cfl's to do a space bucket. LEDs need more height from the plant. That's why space buckets are good stealthy grows. CFL's you can keep a couple inches away where any LED that is worth anything you will need like a foot away. I could be misunderstanding what you mean by space bucket tho... Check out the link below.
As far as household LED bulbs in general for growing i am not sure that they are suitable but someone who has experience growing with LEDs can give you more informantion about what kind of LEDs are good for growing. Hope this helps.

Good question, not sure but I'd imagine you'd treat them like cfl's. They can't have much penetration... sounds like a good experiment...

If you can hold the back of your hand within 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the LED bulb (if I am correct in assuming that the LED bulb is the household Varity) for 30 - 45 minuets without burning your hand, or leaving any pinkish or reddish color to your skin then they might be safe, but not ever using them, I can not be certain.
I understand that because of the mercury content, some stores do not sell them, have you tried to purchase the CFLs on line?

Ive always wondered if regular leds would grow a plant. may as well try it out good luck with your space bucket
Without knowing what led it is can't know spectrum/watts etc

The short answer is -yes!
I have a space bucket I use mostly for clones or holding space, which I decide which light based upon the heat.
Take the LED and remove the plastic defuser first.
Distance is not and issue as you can always add buckets to your setup if needed.
I have never done a complete space bucket grow, but see many examples using LED light on the space bucket site, including UFO LED's .
