Howdy Breaking my Cherry and welcome,
I am on my fifth DWC grow and I run the top feed (actually at the bottom of the rockwool cube) continuously during the grow. The flow encourages the roots to grow down into the reservoir and helps to circulate the water and nutrients. The only time that I turn off the pump is if it gets clogged with roots. The most important things to do, from my experience, is keep ALL light out of the reservoir, keep the water very well aerated, and keep the water temperature between 64 and 70 deg. F.. I also recommend using an antimicrobial like Florashield, Hydroguard, or hydrogen peroxide to help keep algae and fungus under control.
good luck with your endeavor.
