Hello everyone,

This is my first grow and I am growing in coco mixed with some perlite. Its been 2 weeks now since I planted the seeds.

I managed to find 2 different kinds of coco coir both locally produced here in Asia but I made a rookie mistake and did not wash and buffer my coco.

Both coco looked clean and fresh so planted 2 seeds using one type of coco and one seed using the other type of coco.

The first two of my plants look light green and are turning yellow it seems. They also growing slow and I think all those are signs of not enough nutrients being fed.

Yesterday I gave the first nutrient feeding with 500 PPM and PH 5.8 and the run off came 1500 PPM :0 The plants look like they need need nutrients yet the run off PPM is so high? What could it be?

Where as the one plant in the other coco is looking green and healthy n is also growing fast yet the run off PPM of that coco was even worse at around 5500PPM after a 500PPM feeding.

I am so confused please guys need some help from experienced growers ??? I dont want my plants to die

Solutions I found online have been mixed some suggest I do a flush with RO or Distilled water to bring down the PPM some suggest to keep feeding at around 500PPM and the run off PPM will eventually lower. While some say to just all out forget the PPM and not worry about it. Its all so confusing?

My setup: 600w HPS, General Hydroponics Trio Flora and GH Cal Mag. 7 gallon Fabric Pots (One seed in a plastic cup)

I have also attached pictures of all 3 plants.

Thanks in advance!!

Never tested runoff ppm, and never test runoff ph in fabric pots. Probably running into issues because you didnt buffer coco first and i am just guessing but you are probably over watering if you are getting runoff in a 7 gal pot with a seedling. Or it could be bad genetics. Dont focus on runoff imo focus on what you put in.

Need to wash it before using it. Especially if its brick form. Usually the cheaper coco is derived from broken coconuts found on the beach. Lots of time to soak up salt water and contaminants. Then you want to buffer with calmag. Unless its prewashed and pre buffered. I see lots of chunky chunks in your medium. Seedlings look like they are 3 days old only.

Covid420 Yes you can over water coco. I'm tired of having this argument. Yes runoff is essential when growing in coco...when the roots are developed enough to drink the excessive amount of water that you put in a 7 gallon pot. Seedlings can and will get drowned if you dont allow roots to grow before saturating a 7 gallon pot. But i assume you have more than a decade of experience, not a handful of grows. to be this confident. People like you are what make me hate this site.

Oh and the argument it only holds as much water as it can hold makes no logical sense. Fill a 5 gal bucket and stick your head in. It only holds as much water as it can hold too so you should be fine. wtf really

I am a new grower but I also think u can overwater coco if u keep it too sludgy and wet all the time besides that its pretty good at getting dry quickly.

I did overwater a few times just to get a PPM run off measuring and the plant is still alive just not growing anymore and turning really light colored.

What I am really curious about is why u think the PPM does not matter? Doesn’t a PPM run off of around 5000-6000 tell me that there is alot of “stuff” in my coco that should not be there?

I just did clean a new batch of coco and buffered it twice with cal mag and going to transplant the two sick looking seedlings. Fingers crossed.

But Tersky if u think PPM does not matter then should i not just let the seedling stay in the this coco and pray it gets healthy again?

I know rookie mistake. The coco said its ready to use so I just did not even think of cleaning it, big mistake :(

So u suggest I transplant all 3 plants to the new buffered coco? Or just the 2 sick looking ones? Because one of em seems to be growing quiet well even with the super high run off PPM of about 5000?

N also thanks for the reply. Really need the help

Tersky I just laugh at arrogant inexperienced growers spewing only what they read and not from first hand grow experience, keep up the good work and don't let it bother you.

Tapsombong91 I personally think taking ppm from runoff in fabric pots is not accurate as fabric absorbs nutes from previous waterings. Eventually a buildup of salts accumulates and forms a white crusty film that is sometimes mistaken for mold but is actually an accumulation of salts. I found this out when trying to test runoff ph in fabric pots and ended up killing my plants because i was thinking the runoff ph was the same as my root zone ph. In just a coco perlite mix there is nothing to buffer your ph except what you put into the medium i found out so i just focused on keeping my ph going in at 6.0 and have not had issues (unless i messed up) since. If you were in plastic pots i would be worried since plastic does not hold onto anything like fabric does. I have planted into non buffered coco and had slow stunted growth and some deficiencies but overcame them by doubling up on the cal-mag the next feed and maintained cal mag in all my feeds. It took a few weeks but bounced back and actually ended up being one of my better harvests. I grow photos so i had the time to correct my mistake. If it were an auto i would have had a much smaller harvest. I would do a 1.5x dose of cal mag next watering. It wont be immediate and the plant may be stunted for a couple weeks but if you do a couple 1.5x doses it should recover with minimal shock to the plant

My recommendation for the future is to start in a smaller pot or SOLO cup as starting in a large container makes it difficult to water a seedling and maintain correct ph. The easiest way to water in coco is to 20% runoff but if you start a seedling in a 7 gal pot you run the risk of drowning the plant before it is able to put out roots. Starting in a solo cup has less medium so it dries out faster so you can water to 20% runoff and it greatly reducing risk of overwatering a seedling. I personally would not transplant a seedling as the roots are so weak and few it could easily kill them. Sorry for the long winded response.

Mr.furley I try but i have been a raw nerve lately. Too much reality and no weed lol. Had to break down and call my hookup. I was going to take a tolerance break but the dog issues i have mentioned a couple times has been making it rough lately.

Can you explain to me how I can over water my 50/50 coco perlite mix sitting on pot elevators above drips trays? Since the coco absorbs everything I give it and then has the rest runoff into the drip tray? Can you explain to me how my autopot will over water my coco? Can you explain to me how hydro halos over water coco by constantly dripping? I'm ignorant and don't understand basic physics can you help my poor layman brain?

Lol again? Really?
We've had this talk, you have had it with many coco growers on here and I'm sure other places.

If you want to show us something then start a grow Journal, top feed, flood and drain, sure! whatever and I hope it's bad ass but trolling all the coco threads and telling everyone high frequency watering is the key for every problem and situation is dead wrong. This subject has never stayed long on this forum for a reason and I'm betting it never will.

By the way I call you arrogant and inexperienced not ignorant, I read a lot of post.

Tersky I really appreciate u taking out the time to reply in such detail. Before I started my grow I also decided not to worry about the PPM and just go with what I put in the medium. But since I forgot to buffer the coco and two of my 3 plants became light colored and just stopped growing I got worried and confused myself by googling the shit out of how PPM levels are important. Online this opinion of not caring about the PPM aint very popular and seeing the PPM levels of 5000 PPM really scared me, specially since its my first grow.

Long story short I kept waiting for ur reply and got impatient and just transplanted the two light colored seedlings to the new buffered batch of coco. But ur answer made me regret that now :/

Although I did not transplant the one growing well , even though that one also has a PPM of 5000 and the coco was not buffered. If this plant turns out better than the others then I like u will also never test run off PPM again :)

Covid420 I know this is not my place to say anything as you all seem like experienced growers but why do you want to prove Tersky so bad that coco can never be overwatered?

People who don't use a drip tray like me can am sure over water the coco and drown plants (specially seedlings) if there is poor drainage and if the coco stays too sludgy and wet all the time.

This is a stoner weed growing forum lets all just chill and do what suits our grows the best and just discuss that without having to claim that one’s ways are better than the others. If at the end we all get a good harvest and bud to smoke, aint that the point :)

Plus Tersky again not my place as I do not know u guys well but I read something about ur dog. Good luck with everything and wish u strength if u going through some troubles.

Thanks Tapsombong91 . Just have a 14 year old dog in her final stages. Doc gives her a few weeks to a few months at best. I clean up piss and poop on a daily basis and have to help her around as she has a hard time walking and standing. I have mentioned it a couple times and didnt want to hijack a thread again with personal issues but since you asked i dont mind telling you. It's been an emotional past few months as im coming to the realization i am going to have to put her down soon and my patience and tolerance to things has been quite low lately.

More like I won't anymore after three years of the BS it creates. you're going to need to learn this one for yourself obviously.

Anytime you want to put your new found miracle method up against lifting the pot, watering every two days style I'm good to go! I'll even give you time to get your first grow done.
