What is the life expectancy of Mother,Father plants.Being cannabis is an annual and after awhile even greenhouse overwintering of annual plants,they just get tired.Bodhi uses a certain Male Hash plant for his hash strains,is their different life expectancy between Mother and Father plants?How long can cannabis live between force flowering then back to veg ?When is it time to put ole Mom&Dad out to pasture,and let the kids take over?
 
I have heard of 30 year old mothers. I don't know for sure, but I don't see why a male couldn't live as long.

If I recall, DJ short has a really old Flo mother. He runs 19/5 indoors and he likes to put it outside in good weather which he claimed revitalizes her. I'm sure he uses a pest management system, because that's a great way to pickup bugs.

Anyway, it's definitely not natural for cannabis to live that long but it seems we get to play God to some extent with no reprocussions. Keep in mind, anything that weakens a mother will transfer to a clone. It's critical to keep the mother as stress free and comfortable as possible.
 
I am a little confused by your post Mike. It was my understanding that to keep a mother, she NEVER gets to flower. She must be kept in the veg stage and used for clones. If you can return a plant to veg after harvest so she can flower again, then I've learned something new today.

You can do exactly that. It's called monster cropping. Wannabebotatnist is doing it right now! There seems to be two versions of it. One is taking a flowering clone and revegging it. This causes to the clone to grow bushier than normal. The other is harvesting and revegging the stumps that are left over. I'm not very familiar with this process as it seems to be quite rare.

I've heard mixed reviews on the process, that it's faster to just reboot after harvest. But there are some precious genetics out there that need preservation. If this is a last resort, I'm all for it.

Please note, monster cropping is nothing like a mother/clone setup. Mothers never get to see 12 hours of darkness unless they're done donating clones and the owner flowers out the mom...
 
Yes, I know it can revert back and you can take a clone during flowering. I just did not know that you could completely strip a plant bare of all buds and reveg for a whole new crop. So, yes, I did learn something new today.
 
I've personally never maintained a parent plant for more than a few months. The only person I know who's kept a plant for 5+ years will keep his father/mother in veg for a year at a time. After about a year he'll pick one of the very best and most vigorous clones from that plant, and use that to make a new father/mother for the next year. He claims that helps the plant/clones stay more vigorous over time compared to keeping the same exact plant year after year. But I know some growers just keep the original plant and keep it in veg for years. Either way will work, and some strains are decades old!
 
If you're not selling anything it's not advertising as far as I can tell! We just want to make sure everyone is sharing their honest experiences, not pushing products because they're trying to make money :)
