I don't know how common this might be, but I thought I'd share how I train plants. I make these M shapes out of copper wire that is malleable by hand but will hold a bend in a growing stem. I don't tie down the plant, I just direct the stems with these. The plant always returns to 'up,' so it can make the stems grow into a stair shape, which I just like.
