Long term storage of seeds

Dagmar asked a good question in another thread and didn't really get an answer. What is the best way to store your seeds for up to a year, and maybe even two years.

I assume a cool dark place, but are they tried and true methods. Freezer? seal-a-meal? Those who are using seeds more than a year old, how have you stored them?
 
So basically a dark place and assuming your sock drawer never gets exceptionally hot. I would think to use the fridge, packaging should be pretty airtight.

Maybe you did. Put seeds still in original packaging in baggy and fill with rice. Maybe put that bag in a dark bag, so fridge lite has less effect. I do like this idea.

Except for my uber paranoid husband that will want to hide them from Big Brother. LOL
 
I keep mine on the kitchen counter- in a light resitant container- BUT

I live in Maine, so anywhere/everywhere is a cool, dark place with low humidity- LOL
 
Thanks, insomniaczz, I have a bad habit of having other folks questions cause me to ask additional questions of my own. I should have started a new string. Good info!:tongue-out::tongue-out:
 
I have been keeping seeds (bag assortment) in the freezer section of my refrigerator for over two years and have not had ant problems with them. I had kept seeds wrapped up in plastic baggies in a cool dry place for many years and when I first started to try my hand at growing, I could not get any to sprout. I moved the remaining seeds to the freezer and after about three weeks, tried again to start some more seeds after being in the freezer, and they sprouted!
I now keep all of my seed stock wrapped up in plastic baggies in the freezer. I do not know all of the details or reasons why the freezer time would make a difference, but it does.
Good luck on your endeavors, and as we used to say back in the 70's, "keep on a truckin'".

It was a good question, and wanted some answers too. You're right, sometimes a question gets lost in a thread if it doesn't pertain to topic.
 
Thanks for your input! 😊 I will be moving many of my extra seeds to freezer...they're just too precious to lose! 🌱🌱
 
Don't forget if you put them in the freezer then when you are ready to grow them you should let them aclimate for 24hrs at roon temp before trying to germinate them.
 
Thanks to all for your input. We had bag seed that was about 10 months old that hubby just keep in an old style film canister in a drawer. 18 out of 21 sprouted and thrived.

Now that I'm spending good money to buy fem seeds, what to make sure that stay viable for more than a year. We've already decided we are going to do no more than 4 at a time, and at this point not heavy users,although I am really looking forward to making butter, hard candy like lollipops and capsules or tinctures, so need extra to do that stuff
