Keeping track of humidity while curing?

I'm preparing for harvesting and curing here soon. and i considered getting a small hygrometer to put in the mason jars im curing in. but something ive heard suggested is to use the hygrometer for your tent by drilling a hole in the center of the mason jar lid, and putting the prbe in there to test the humidity and environment inside the jar, then just taping up the hole when done. what do you think?
 
Already been done. You can buy the lids on Amazon. Good idea but it's cheaper to buy a 12 pack of hydrometers and drop one or two in a jar. You still have to open the jar to burp during cure.
 
Cheaper until you have to replace the batteries <G> I just paid $5.00 a piece for replacements! (meters take 2 bats each)
So I'm using only a few hydrometers and swapping them around.
Ounce I hit a stable 57%, I seal the jars for good until use.

Id be fine with that if i could just get two of them. I'm trying not to buy any more equipment unless totally neccesary

The batteries I need are LR44's and I bought energizer 357/303 to use as a replacement.
(happy to announce my jarred GG4 is now at 58%, close enough<g>/perfect for joint rolling-my preferred method of smoking)

These are easily the best buy for your buck and more accurate than anything under $100.
Completely accurate and great to drop in mason jars.
 
I'd guess the technology in all these relatively inexpensive hygometers is about the same. It's not measuring to critical scientific accuracy, nor is it dealing with wide swings or rapid swings in humidity. It's probably pretty simple technology at this point as shown by their size and how cheap they are.
 
And at least for me having grown and jarred many i also feel the buds in each jar while they are burped and layed open. I don't squeeze them just feel for humidity/heat. So far i've not had deminished scents for smelling a bad bud with possible mold. A couple times of opening a jar and smelling that off scent of musk&dirt i empty the jar and search for the mold.
 
GreenState I've had quite a few hygrometers and these ones are far superior to all the others I've owned. I even have 2 calibrated ones and I reckon these are better. I have 8 of these and if I put them side by side they read within 1%. Most hygrometers twice the cost of these are rubbish, typically vary +/- 5%. My calibrated ones are +/-2% and my ones I use for automation are all over the shop and have to be recalibrated every week.
 
Yeah I buy the cheap ones by the 12 pack then line them up next to each other. Any over 4 % difference go in the trash. Usually 1in 10 are way off but the price can't be beat. I dry to 55% myself so a couple degrees don't matter.

shit maybe i should have done that instead of finding a two pack one
 
Just thought I’d add to this post as it seems most of us use these.

I just got a dozen from amazon to add to the ones I had, I figure the brand doesn’t matter, as they are likely all the same.
I have them next to my registered/calibrated meter which I bought to calibrate all my equipment with as I was tired of the discrepancy between all my equipment , inkbird, ac infinity , Grovee, etc.

As you can see they are pretty consistent across the 12 which is actually surprising, as normally there are some outliers as mentioned above. Unfortunately the all seem to be relatively far off.

Since you can’t calibrate these I put a piece of masking tape on each and write the individual discrepancy, then just do the math in my head when I’m checking them

Calibrated hygrometers need regular calibration. Over time they drift and accuracy can change substantially with temps.

I'd be guessing those new meters are on the money and your older calibrated one has probably drifted.
 
You are correct about the drift , but the calibrated one is within its guaranteed time frame between recalibrating and has been properly cared for. It’s less than a year old.
Doesn’t mean it can’t be wrong, but personally I’d trust it over the 5 dollar Amazon version.
Anyway, like everything I post just food for thought and conversation
 
If you want to save yourself some $$...simply spritz the under side of the jar's lid w/ H2O. That will bring the RH up to the low 60's. You can check it with a hygrometer but it works every time. I have a cheap hygrometer for each jar. Yeah, they are a hassle and replacement batteries are as well, at least to me. But, I do get peace of mind when the hygrometer reads 62%. That's where I like it for storage.
 
I also use the mini hygrometers for curing to measure humidity levels in the jar. I've also used them as monitors for my 2 x 2 tents.
