Just Bongs

Ok forum friends, you talked me into getting a bong. I have used bongs, just not had 1 of my own. I'm just an old joint smoker. I'm thinking that a medium sized bong would work for me. So, what maker and style do you recommend? And thanx going forward!

Hi, Chipper!
My favorite bong of all time is the Earthworks Old Man/Wizard pottery bong from the early '70's. Don't use mine anymore because it's worth $300+ on eBay, when you can find them. I would recommend sturdy pyrex glass with a wide base (avoids knocking it over) and a straight tube design with removable stem and bowl (to faciliate cleaning), +/- 12" tall. Check out eBay. You'll find a good selection of colors and options, even ones that fluoresce under a black light. Super fancy, complec twisted tubing is nice to look at, but I like simple, easy functionality.

Thanx Allotrope. I guess you wouldn't burn your face off using a 12in bong and it sounds kind of easy to clean being a straight up design. It's cool you have a $300 collectible bong!

Back in uni we made bongs out of jus about anything. It was kind of a contest. One of the bongs I made was from a tall spiral chianti bottle like this. That was a fun one. It was eventually broken by some stoner.

Ha. With lots of patience. First you have to find the bottle. They were expensive back in 78. Then you go to your local head shop and buy the down tube, collar and bowl so you can cut the tube length to correct size. Then you go to the campus police and ask to borrow the engraving pen so you can mark your valuable property with an identification number. Go to the parking lot and scoop up enough sand to fill the bottle then fill the bottle with the sand. Bring it back to your room and place is laying down but partially tilted up on the floor with a pillow under it. Then you take the engraving pen and start chipping away at the glass between the bottom of the swirl and the top of the basket like where the label is. Just go round and round and round and round round and round and round and round round and round and round and round round and round and round and round for hours and hours and hours long hours and hours and hours long for 3-4 days. Eventually after driving everyone nuts with the sound you have been making, a round hole in the glass to fit the down tube magickly appears in the glass that fits the down tube. If it doesn't fit just go round and round and round some more. If you made it this far with out the bottle breaking you are home free. There was no carb hole, you had to pull the down tube for that. Then bring the engraving pen back to the keystones and act like the tip of the carbide pen is not completely destroyed when you return it. Ignorance is bliss. Make sure you get everyone that you pissed of making the noise good and stoned to make up for it. Watch out for clumsy stoners. They have a habit of breaking things. Not on purpose, just not paying attention and shit happens. The hit took 2 full lung draws. The first was to burn the dope which would fill the swirl to the top with smoke, then exhale, pull the tube, then inhale the smoke. They called me fire breather. The things we did instead of studying was incredible. It didn't matter, the classes were way to easy to need to pay attention. Any way that is how I made a bong out of a bottle like that.

Thanx for taking the time to type all that for me Ckbrew! That's impressive in itself! Fortunately, these days I can afford and have a Dremel with many bits and can avoid the popo! True or not that's just funny!!!

I have been looking for an 18" Kabong. That's what I used 50+ years ago. They're still around, right? Apparently not!

I bought a glass bong at a vape store. I really like the bong but cleaning it is a hassle. It is thick glass. I've knocked it once from countertop height to the concrete floor. The bong survived but I broke the bowl. You might consider adding a bubbler to your setup.

The bubbler is way easier to clean. It also helps keep the water in your actual bong a little cleaner. I use 99% isopropyl and rock salt or something similar in coarseness to clean both. I've used the commercial bong and pipe cleaners...kept coming back to the alcohol. It just works well.

Be careful, you can spend a small fortune on glass...just sayin'.

Thanx for the heads up and help Golf! Ckbrew reminded me of college days and how it was spent. I did not like high school! My first semester of college got shot from too much smoke and playing spades, so I enlisted in the Army. I came back alive and went back to college, Yea GI Bill!! I must have been more serious after that and completed my upper grad work. Now it's just a mixed-up memory!!

@Chipmonk, What ever type you get. Be sure it has a angled neck. That way you don't have to sit up to take a toke. Just saying.
