[JOURNEY] Purple Haze with 400W HPS/MH Grow Lights

Hey guys! I’ve been lost for a few weeks since I made my first post in the forum a couple weeks ago... I’ve been reading a lot about it, I’m so looking forward to start this beautiful journey next week. I’ve got my seeds already and all my set up is on its way.

My grow tent is going to be 32"x 32"x 63", I’m planing` to grow 2 plants (Purple Haze) with a HPS/MH Grow Light of 400W with this hood,

I’ll connect a 6-Inch 400 CFM Inline Fan for the exhaust (with Fan Speed Adjuster in case it’s too much)

I’ll be using a top-fed Deep Water Culture (DWC) hydroponic system as a medium for these two plants… with General Hydroponics Flora as a nutrients and a pH Control Kit to control the PH and Botanicare HYDROGUARD to protect my plant from Root Rot.

I’ll be placing two small fans In the grow area to get a nice breeze surrounding the plants. I’ll be using a Humidity Monitor with Indoor Thermometer to watch out the temperature and moisture in the grow tent.

Am I missing something? Do you guys have any suggestion?

Thanks!!

I’ll be posting pictures next week and I’ll try to keep this journey updated.

Hey marco, it all sounds great!! I'm a hydro grower, just make sure you keep the reservoir temps down and make sure there are absolutely no light leaks into the reservoir. I have done my battles with root rot, and they weren't fun!!!!

Can't wait to see pictures of your plants!! ;-}

Sounds good Marco .I grow in dirt so i.m not much help but have seen ATU.s grows and she knows what shes talking about. good luck your going to love it

Morning Marco, I try to grow in dirt too, like OJH, so i ain't much help either.
But like OJH says Alltatup sure knows how to grow the same way your gonna grow, and would be excellent help for you.
Sounds like your about ready to get growing, looks like you about got everything, but I promise you , something will pop-up before to long that you have just got to have. That's just the way it is ,for me anyway.
Happy Growing Marco. Good Luck.

Hi I grow in dwc and what alltatup said watch your roots light leeks are the enemy. If u keep your roots healthy you will get an amazing plant but that's just 1 of meany things to keep an eye on.
I also notice u are going to grow a haze I am going to start 2 next month. I have no experince with full sativa but I have read that they don't like alot of nutes.
exciting I can't wait to see how it goes.

Evening Marco, I got a 440 exaust fan ,and a tower fan in my tent, and I've also got a 4 inch inline fan like that one your looking at, to help bring in fresh air, but I've still got plenty of negative pressure in my tent.

You want negative pressure, you want your tent to suck in when you have your exaust fan on, You can add that inline fan your looking at as long as your tent still sucks in, then if you use a filter no one will be able to smell your pot growing.
That fans blows in how hard 100 cfm, ?? That's all mine is and it works fine.
I hope that helps you a little bit. Good Luck

First pictures.

I'm worried about height of my tent is too short.. I'm going to try scrogging (Tutorial: https://goo.gl/3CfdSQ) to keep my plant well distributed and as short as possible.

The tent is going to be placed in my roommate's bedroom to keep it hided from visitors. The only problem with that is we don't have windows in our bedrooms... I know the plant needs plenty fresh air. What do you guys suggest?

I decided I'm going to cover the reservoir with reflective tape all over and the lid will be covered with aluminium paper. You can tell how effective the aluminium paper is blocking the light seeing the last picture. I'm being meticulous about blocking the light into the reservoir.

I'll probably begin germinating my seeds tomorrow or after tomorrow. I don't want to germinate them until having all my set up ready.

Feel free to ask any question or give any suggestions

Good morning Marco ,I don't see you having problems with your height ,I grew in a tent with the same height and never had an issue as long as you top them when young, the set up can be pretty overwhelming to a newbe so go slow and steady. just remember to keep your exhaust fan ducting as straight as possible. I think the rule is that every 90% turn you add like 50 feet of ducting and that decreases air flow dramatically, If you go to my current journal on fourth page you will see a picture of my exhaust fan with duct work that was to long so I had to redo it . you will face alot of emergencies on your first grow, there is nothing that can't be overcome so ask alot of questions and take pictures. You are going to love this good luck

Well.. The light bulbs i got from amazon were broken. I decided I had to get the light bulbs in person. So last Friday I went to a store in Brooklyn with EVERYTHING you need to grow indoor. It's not legal, so you're not supposed to talk about growing marijuana plants. The guy only had the 400W High Pressure Sodium bulb and told me to come back to get the Metal Halide on Tuesday... I couldn't even wait to start germinating my seeds... So I just went for it.

FINALLY DAY 1!! 11/10

I'm literally following Nebula Haze's tutorial of How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds in Hydro (https://goo.gl/nfWDGX). That day was super cold and I turned off the heaters... When I came back from work the temperature was at 55 F :sweating:

DAY 3 11/12

I’ve been trying my best to keep the temperature around 75 F and the paper napkins moisturized all the time but It’s not that easy. These last days have been pretty cold here and just can’t turn off my heater or the temperature goes down. But the heater keep drying everything (including the paper napkins)

GOOD NEWS: I can see little white roots coming out from BOTH of the seeds!!! Aren't they beautiful?:)

I'm going to wait to little more to move them to the rapid rooters. I still have to wait 2 more days for my MH bulb... I hope they don't sprout until later than that.

Hey Marco, glad to see your seeds popped. Next time put the damp paper towel in a tupperware bowl with a lid to keep moist, a desk lamp adjusted low will provide enough heat to do the job. On the plus side that 400 hps will help keep the room warm. As for fresh air, intake and exhaust in the same room will do fine. Grow happy.

14/11 DAY 4

I got home from work with the 400W MH bulb (but before I spent around 2 and half hours in the subway looking for these bulbs) and Immediately changed the HPS… I also moved the hood closer to the plants (20.5 inch exactly)

When I checked the rapid rooter I realized It was completely soaked. So I moved the top fed tubing so It got an inclination to the bottom of the net pot so It doesn’t send the water directly to the rapid rooter. The little plants didn’t look very happy after doing this.

After that I checked the PH… It was 6.86 so I decided to fix the PH and made another mistake… I used too much PH down… It was around 5 after that… Then I put too much again… And I struggle until getting the 5.99.

You guys were right. I’ve been struggling with the high temperature. Apparently the big exhaust fan (6") is way potent compared to the small inline (4") so my grow tent start to suck itself… And that makes my hood get closer to the wall and then the exhaust duct gets completely blocked. You guys have no idea how much my roommate and I have been struggling with that and trying to keep the temperature under 80 F.

11/15 DAY 5

I made a few modifications to the distribution of the air flow inside the grow tent so the air, including putting the 6" fan at 70% with the Speed Adjuster. I might need a bigger inline fan.

I’ve been dealing with very low humidity, It’s always around 30%. I tried putting some wet towels around but bah… It helps (It gets around 40/45%) but I have to change them every couple hours. So I just ordered a humidifier online.

God damn, I thought I was ready but I was so wrong. I still spending money and effort to get this to work.Of course It’s my first time growing… These things aren’t going to happen again, I hope lol

This is how they look today:

You guys feel free to make any question or suggestion.

Thanks!

DAY 9
Question: Should I count my days from the seeds sprouted, vg stage or since the first day I put the seeds on the wet napkin?

The temperature during the 18 hours of light is between 77-82
The temperature during 6 hours of night 68-74
Humidity is always between 25% and 45% (Still waiting for the humidifier , still changing wet towels every few hours:sweat:)
PH is always between 5.8 and 6.5

My two plants are growing… I realized they are having a green-yellowish color… What do you guys think?

Both roots are looking good

marco, I usually count from germination, but just to remember the date. I go by size of the plant and vigor of growth for when I want to switch to flower. Then I have 2 dates for flower: the date I switch to 12/12, and the date I see first signs of pistils...

11/22

PH2 has a weird curvature in its leaves today. What do you guys think that means?

Everything else looks great. I’m going to wait few more days to start with the scroggring
