HELP! Is this algae and is it causing my problems

Mica

New member
Hi everyone. This grow started a bit rough and the plants were given flowering nutes instead of grow nutes. They recovered reasonably quickly and the smaller plant is doing much better, but the larger two plants are getting much worse.

Questions
1. Is this algae in my tank and how can I prevent in in the future

2. What is going on with my plants?

My setup
Autopot system using coco peat medium and Biocanna Bio Vege nutrient, with a Mars Hydro TWS2000 light on a 18/6 cycle

Hey Mica, Ive always grown in soil or coco so I’m new to reservoirs as well but i must say yours does not look healthy. Are you using any type of algae preventer or a water pump in your reservoir?

Im 1 month into my first auto pot grow, 3rd week the reservoir has been active. I have a water pump that comes on for 15min every 2hrs to keep nutes mixed, I’m swapping my reservoir out every 2wks and using some algae preventer. Water looks clear with a slight red tint from the nutes.

Heres the stuff I use, barley use it so it’ll last a long time. GWE recommended

It looks like there are biologics in your tank. Sterilize the entire system res and hoses. Only time res water is frothy is when bacteria is thriving. Also make sure your res is 60-70 F or below as bacteria starts to thrive above 72 F.

Side note not sure if the nutes you are using are good for hydro. Saw there was BIOCANNA Bio Vega and maybe that is what you are referring to and it says to use up mixed solution within 24 hrs and i think because if left longer bacteria will start to form. Not sure if this is what is happening but know from prior DWC experience that biologics in res is a recipe for bacteria and root rot. Like i said tho, im not familiar with this line so i could be wrong. I always recommend synthetic nutes (like GH Flora Tio) for hydro because of how easy it is to get root rot.

Thanks everyone. I do think the problem is my nutrients which are organic, I believe what I seeing in the tank is fermentation which is bad in so many ways for my plants.

Going to flush the system and replace the nutes with synthetics. Will check the roots for rot at the same time.

Thanks again

Hey everyone

Do you think this is root rot? It was not slimy in any way, there was no smell and the roots were strong.

First picture is fresh out of the medium, then I washed it down a bit. There is brown bits on the roots but I assume thats just dirt from the growth medium
