Increasing head room by modifying reflector.

ISO: Creative MacGyvering! All you get is a paper clip, piece of gum and a shoelace

I'm looking for a way to increase the overhead space in my tent so I can give the plants some breathing room. I have a pretty standard reflector (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Y78PE20/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) The v-hooks and rope ratchets take up probably 6-8" of valuable bud-making space. Any suggestions? It doesn't have to be adjustable of course, but bonus points if it is!

Ok using given materials.. replace the v hooks and pulls ropes using the shoe lace tying each end to the holes where the v hooks are.. then Bend the paper clip into a u hook.. and bam.. but because I wouldn't trust that with that much weight.. I'd simply take out the v hooks attaching the pulleys directly to the light saving that amount of space if that isn't enough for you.. you could pull the rope out of the pulleys threading them through the holes and rethreading back into the pullies that would give you plenty of space if you tighten it fully.. make sure to put the pullies on top of the bar for maximum space in the future.. training the plants might be more effective

Remove clips

Secure hood to 1x (x) 2"-4"

Slip wood between top frame and tent skin

You could put drill a hole in each sidw of the board to put eye-hooks for adjustment and when going for max just remove them.

OR

Make a framework, pvc

2 panels that fit inside the tent on each side

Drill holes in pvc, top to bottom, making them all line up level

Make stop pegs out of something like hobby dowels

Secure to tent or make the top and bottom pvc rails also

Small frame work to attach light that fits into your pvc framework and can rest on stop dowels

Now it's adjustable from against the roof to the floor at whatever increments you drilled and will also double as a ScrOG frame with a little modification.

OR

take that concept and use shelving rails. You'll probably have to cut to fit but all the drilling is done.

I have the same ratchets as you, very nice. I also wanted more flexibility. I used four ratchet pullys and removed both V hooks and directly connected the ratches to the hood. This allowed me to raise the hood to practically a couple of inches of the top of the tent. But instead of tying the ratches individually on the tent poles. I had them wrap over two poles and connected the ratches to the adject pair from the otherside. Essentially hugging the top of the tent. It allowed a more rigid system and also the added benefit of adjust heights on all corners of the light. 90° angle anyone ?.

Daskahn You definitely get the MacGyver award! I'm more of a MacGruber myself Thanks for tip on setting up the ratchets for next time. I agree about the plant training. The problem is that my tent is only 3' x 3' so horizontal space is also an issue. I lst'd the hell out of them in veg and they all got tangled up together. I'm looking to get a bigger tent but it's hard to find one that's bigger horizontally and shorter than 6'2" (I'm set up in a basement currently). I appreciate your help!

GanjaGed So many ideas! I really like the idea of mounting the light to a 1x4 with eye hooks and slipping it between the frame and the skin. I might use that or the shelving rails concept on my next grow. Really brilliant! You could make some money doing tent mods!

Danofdanger Bonus points for you! I think your idea would be easiest to implement right now and I'd still have the adjustability of the hood. You don't happen to have a picture of the set up, do you?

No unfortunately as i am in the motion of building a new room. I do however have my trusty galaxy note phone and scribbled a diagram for you.
You have the top hook clips connected to an adjacent pair which go over two poles instead of one, then have the adjustables at the bottom so you can easily moderate your height.
The excess string you just tie into loops to keep it tidy.

Hook rope ratchets to top of side walls instead of hanging bars. Still use v hooks. Light can be pulled up to top.

hi Ruby Slippers, you said "it's hard to find one that's bigger horizontally and shorter than 6'2". One option for this issue is to cut the poles and roll the excess fabric up somehow. I have a Gorilla 4x4 which was too tall for the attic. I cut about 9" off each of the vertical poles and managed to roll and stuff the excess material so it still zips and works fine. It's not perfect and it is a little scary cutting parts of an expensive tent but it works great. The one thing I should have done is order 4 new poles from Gorilla before I cut mine, in case I ever move the tent to a space with enough head room.

Here's a thought.. if a new room you could simply build the tent to your specs also handing the light from your basement ceiling would give more room..

Hang the whole shebang, tent and light from rafters cut off bottom and fill void strip at bottom with cardboard wrapped in tin foil.

Wrap with pvc plastic not tin foil... tin foil causes hot spots
