Hydro vs soil

Just curious. I am low maintenance kind of guy and it seems that Hydro grows require a lot of maintenance. Is the juice worth the squeeze?
 
This is surely going to cause a big debate.....

SOIL OR COCO......plant the plant in the pot and you are done! Taste is better as well

Hydro is a hasell no matter how simple you make it...

Hydro is like a high performance engine. It performs great but requires more to initially setup. It's a bit cleaner since your media is hydroton or rock wool usually. Once you get it tuned, it's very little maintenance. I have a mental checklist I go through everyday, check pumps, check reservoir, etc.

I just started my first coco/super soil grow. It's a bit messier but it's great having a buffer in case issues arise.

Biggest reason I'm trying the new media is due to lack of flavor and smell from my dwc grows. Besides, since I'm relatively new, I want to try it all.

Id love to try a peat based grow, a hempy bucket with coco, aeroponics, and someday aquaponics.
 
We spent so much money already just getting a soil grow up and running. Not about to change to hydro. I love the way the pictures of hydro grows look - everything so neat and tidy. But I'm a farm girl at heart, so it will always be soil.
 
Soil for me. Everybody compliments me of the flavor and the smell of my weed. I feel like Green. Seems like a lot that can go wrong. Also we have quite a few power outages in winter. That would suck. Soil is a bit more forgiving in that respect. But I have to say the friends I have that do grow with Hydro grow more per season.
 
I keep hearing that coco is a hydro grow. Is that just because you have to add nutes regularly? My very first grow I tried to use a super soil that I created, but ran into problems because it hadn't composted enough. Quickly switched to coco (with perlite) and nutes, and the indoor turned out fabulous! Used coco twice more, and no complaints! Outdoors, I would use a super soil. Can't wait to use the compost and worm castings (homemade) in those soil grows! 🌻
 
Everyone told me if it was going to be my first grow then go with soil because hydro would be to much of a challenge. I find this not to be true so far. More variables, true, but if you've got a good head on your shoulders then hydro shouldn't be a problem. Seems alot of soil growers run into bugs compared to hydro growers but it's probably just me seeing things that aren't there lol.
 
For me I think full hydro just adds more components that can fail or complicate things during a power outage. It certainly has benefits but each growers situation and needs are different.

I think for my indoor grows I'll stick with coco as I had recent success with it (technically a hydro grow) but just hand watered daily so I didn't have to worry about pumps and such. You get the best of both worlds with coco. bit like hydro, bit like soil.
 
Agreed! Very easy with coco. I enjoy the simple addition of nutrients when watering, and checking PH is no big deal. Like to keep it simple yet effective!
 
For me it has always been soil,but only because all my grows have been outdoors.I don't know about taste quite honestly,if you gave me a blind taste test,I don't think I could tell the difference.I do think that you can achieve a higher THC content with hydro.But indoor growing has come a long way from my time.Indoor growing and hydroponics was still in conception,they were just coming out with those 1000watt sodium bulbs.I tried one closet grow when I was 17,am now 55,my closet grow ended in disaster,(almost burnt the house down)Got so hot in there that the towel I had on the floor to catch the water dried out and caught fire.Luckily I was in my room when it started. Ahhh to be young again.
 
My first grow is currently a super stealth DWC system and it was a lot of work to first setup. Many things to consider and watch but I find each step very satisfying. Very detail oriented so I feel like I made the right choice. I also own a generator just in case my power goes out. 😁 I will eventually try all methods because I'm in love with growing my own. 👍
 
For low maintenance use coco based-Roots Organic Original- plant an auto strain in the final container (2-3 gal) - and water it.
 
For my first grow, I got some clones from a friend and some soil and just let her grow the way she wanted. I just wanted to find out if I could even grow something. It turned out pretty well. I even submitted a picture to GWE which was shown in one of the editions. It was a Chemo. In my opinion soil is by far the easiest for beginners.
 
I dontknownuttin, But I have found my DWC system to be a no brainer so far. I notice incredible rate of growth . They are a pain to set up but once going they are easy to maintain.
 
I think its about growth rate which is faster in hydro. And like they said more variables means more things that could go wrong but also means if you could get right every aspect of it you'll be closer to satisfying the specific needs of each plant
