How to private message on this site?

I see that button for maybe half a second and poof gone, I think the last messages I sent went public on there profile page.
 
Everyone please share your experiences with the private messaging please! What works and what doesn’t. When I click on someone’s name/picture I go to their profile page ( I think) but have to click About, then press back button to see the private message choice. But I had to click it quick to be able to send a private message. Not sure if it went through though until I searched for a notification. I found a notification at the top right of the page. Clicked on it, saw the reply, then I replied back but could not see my reply. Any suggestions or helpful tips? Thx, Korn
