How and when to test for THC

Can a homegrower test for THC ? Before harvest or after ? How ?

There's an app for that, and a lens for the smart phone, I dont have one, there is a thread on it. Maybe someone that has one will jump in here, but you take a pic of it and it tells how much THC is there. I also would have no idea if it is accurate.
