Hash talk

I'm getting different information about terpenes being water soluble. I get solid advice they are, and solid advice they are not.
I have winterized (dewaxed) for BHO and found my home freezer does very little to solidify the lipids. If comparing coffee filters after running a wash through a Buchner funnel, dry ice does a much better job. Page 7 of this thread is my breakdown.
My solvent will be food grade from here on out. I understand other products are supposed to be safe, but I want to get away from possibly inhaling things that I definitely shouldn't. I don't know from naphtha and acetone and all those other things. Their big turnoff for me is the smell. My dad did a lot of stuff with solvents and strippers and other chemicals for work in the days when proper ventilation and skin protection were only recommendations and there was no MSDS. I am convinced those chemicals gave him ALS and dementia. When I smell some things, I get... weird. Can't explain it. I don't like the smell of evaporating ethanol for personal history, but it doesn't give me the willies.

Hi, Dabber.
I think ethanol is fine, though a bit pricey. Here's a trick I use to recycle my alcohol.
I put my raw RSO solution in a 1000 ml pyrex filter flask, 900 ml full (same one I use for my Buchner funnel).
And, heat the flask on a hot plate, running the vacuum hose not to the pump, but open to the bottom of a 3lb coffee can sitting in a bucket of ice. Recycles the alcohol great, with out having to clean up a bunch of distillation glass. I also wrap aluminum foil over the top 3"-4" of the flask, the top of which is plugged tight with a rubber stopper. The foil helps keep the alcohol hot and vaporized. I'll post some pics if you'd like.

I'd like to see your pictures very much! I've been thinking about some sort of DIY distiller. My roadblock has always been a chiller. Saw a moonshine still at just the right time and realized a cold-water bath would do the same thing.

My research says terpenes are not water soluble at least not cold or room temp water. I agree there is information saying it is and some that it isn’t. Bud washers pay a lot of attention to this issue
I’m leaning towards no as it seems like a plant that’s in nature and exposed to rain would not want its defences to be washed off every time it rained

Smallgrow Your rain analogy smacked me up the head. After more reading...
All the canna-goodies are in the trichomes. Trichomes are encased in lipids. When the lipids are removed, terpenes become water soluble.
That's what was making sense to me. We wash buds and make ice water hash without concern of losing terpenes, only trichomes.
Pretty sure a water cure is going to happen.

Ignorant? Nope. Notice how we theorize and summarize and throw ideas at the wall to see what sticks? Then the follow-up? The money's in the follow-up.
Think about how you can make something you have different. I'm looking at different ways to safely and efficiently clean my dope and extract the essential nubbins because I don't like smoking.
If you're happy with what you have and what you do, why worry about changing things up?

Cuz change is the spice of life. I hope you find a method that suits your fancy. :)

Anyone ever watch “Moonshiners” On the history channel? know it’s probably fake but i got hooked just cuz it was like a class on how to make moonshine. I’ve wanted my own still ever since. I did just realize last night i can make alcohol with my water distiller that i bought last month. might try it eventually when there’s time. I was going to go tap with this run but i had some jugs left over so i started with those. I’m glad i decided to grab a distiller on sale cuz we’re having water issues here, and my girls are thirsty af ! Anyways. Shout out to dabber cuz my best and worst first attempt at hash was sooo goooooood 🤤 that’s why the babble.🥴
Merry whatever everyone,
stay safe and stoney

If you are going to get into distilling, make sure you read up on fore shots and heads. That is the first thing to come off the still and they can blind or kill you. Methanol, acetone and other nasty organic chemicals. After that comes the fine shine.

Ckbrew in our case, we are not making moonshine. We are removing existing alcohol from our crude RSO, no fermenting.
Are methanol, acetone, and the other nasties still present if you're starting with alcohol? There are alcohol recovery setups like the Source Turbo Extractor. That's where my question comes from. Does the alcohol that is recovered still have the nasties?

If you are re-distilling ethanol from a clean high proof source no, it has already been cleaned. I once had to make some 95% ethanol from cheap 40% vodka and what was left behind was nasty bad. I was under the impression that AMP wanted to start making shine from mash wash.

My bad guys. I was high and i knew what you guys were talking about, i saw the word still and went off the road lol yes heads have to go, that wAs moonshiners 101 on the show lol sorry dabber for muddling the thread.
