Growing outdoors in Minnesota

Minnesota has been brought up before, but only about strains. My question is about length of season. I have two plants going outdoors:

strains: 1 blue dream 1 skunk hero (both photoperiod)
2 gallon pots
Medium: 100% coco loco
Nutes: dyna-gro grow

I popped the seeds and they came out of the soil June 1. The plants are about 3’ tall now and look great but they haven’t started to flower. They look like they are close but time is getting short. If they flowered today, 8 weeks of flower would be at the end of October. It can be fucking cold as shit here by then. How cold is too cold?

I’m curious: Since flowering is light dependent, plants will always flower around the same time, regardless of when the plants pop out of soil. Does that mean autos are absolutely necessary? Could there be a reason they haven’t flowered yet that isn’t hours of daylight?

No i'm not growing in your " similar climate " photoperiod will flower outdoors when they decide to. You only have them in 2gal pots which is small for photoperiods. And yes your season for growing is short. Try next time to find shorter flowering photoperiods maybe more indica hybred. Plenty of them 55-75 day flowering. But anyway i don't put mine outdoor till middle of June and i start them indoors under lights nearly 2months prior. Sure autos can give you 2 grows if your smart enough timing them. Know your area and length of growing season is key. Warm weather crops like corn, tomatoes,peppers stuff like that. But pot it's on it's own timer when it flowers. You could pull them into a dark shed or garage for 12hrs and put them out again at sunrise.

I’m growing in Canada. I started my seeds indoors in February and moved out to a greenhouse end of March with a heater in it. I have a Bluedream, AK47 and Glueberry going. My Bluedream has been in flower for at least 4-5 weeks now. I’m hoping for frost free nights till it’s finished. The AK and Glueberry have just started preflower so not a hope of finishing them indoors. I think in Minnesota (I’m in Saskatchewan pretty close to you. In Regina to be exact so Southern sask close to the border with N.Dakota) your Bluedream should be well into flower already and finish up outdoors. It seems to be one of the quickest to flower that I’ve grown. I wouldn’t say autos are absolutely necessary if you have the right strain. I’ve also grown photos outdoors that were a bit more work and moved
them into a dark room starting in July and out again in the morning to get them 12/12 light and to flower. It’s more work any need to grow in pots but I always grow in fabric outdoors anyways. The Bluedream does seem to be your best bet for photos though.

I’m in MN too and started seeds indoors in early April to get a head start before transplanting in late May. Keep an eye on bud rot in late summer—it creeps in quick with humidity. I dry in my garage with a small fan and dehumidifier. For backup during the off-season, I stash a thc disposable weed pen since outdoor grows here can be unpredictable.
