I grow autos so I start mine as soon as the cotyledon turn green but autos grow like kudzu so not a lot of time.
I have read that some start when the first multi lobed leaf starts. I would probably start at that point on a photo. I don't know about clones.

Day 1 of sprout with autos on photos i count the first set of true leaf.
