Grow room noise

I had no idea how noisy a dwc with hid grow would be. I had to buy a 6" 450 cfm fan to cool my tent, bought a less expensive one and man that thing sounds like a jet engine. If the fan is off then you hear the constant running of water. Grow in my bsmt and it makes me a bit nervous because we do have people over sometimes. Previously my soil/cfl grows in a cardboard box were almost silent.
 
I ran a separate circuit for the tent, I'm thinking about putting a switch in the stairway so I can kill the power in the event someone was going to be in the bsmt
 
That may be the answer, not much else I could do other that spend two hundred on a different fan....not an option for my budget:frown:
 
If you do get the controller, I have problems with my ventech 440 cfm at lower speeds stalling out. Experiment with turning your fan off and on at various settings. You may find that even though you can adjust to a lower setting and it will still run, but if you turn it off and on again, the motor may not start at all. This means it will probably stall at some point and you just cooked your plants...

I don't go below medium by more than a few degrees on the dial. I've tested at medium low with no problems but the prospect of the motor stalling requires I give a significant safety buffer.
 
The fan I have came with 2 factory speeds, you just have to change some wiring, it's not hard, check the manual mate yours might too:)
 
My 747 CFM inline fan is so quiet I can not hear it outside the grow room when running at 100% speed. Quality equipment = quiet operation. (my dog sleeps all-day in the same room as my fan and other DWC stuff is in.). I guess the motor bearings are good quality and help with motor noise.
 
My setup vents into my hallway. The noise I get is mostly from the air flow exiting the vent in the door. Like you Joker I wanted a kill switch (but only for the fans).

I have front room lights that run off of a Home Easy remote plug system, I just got an additional plug and put my fan controller through it so I can use the remote to kill the airflow should a Gas or Electric technician turn up to read my meter, I can just quickly kill the fan/air flow noise.

The air pump for the DWC reservoir (HiBlow XP80) is a little noisy but I'm not keen to kill the power to that at any time. I was thinking of boxing it in with a few PC fans and noise dampening foam but at the moment most people don't seem to notice or care about the noise that produces.
