Despite all of the reviews about bearing failures on my exhaust fan I jumped in based on the overwhelming level of support and apparently quick replacement units. And I figured by now they should have it resolved. Well, as of this morning I now know what that failure sounds like. So...problem #1 it failed on a Sunday. Problem #2 it failed on a Sunday during a major holiday week. Problem #3 we moved back Thanksgiving feast due to others work schedules until Jan 1st...Wednesday. My house. No way in hell I get a replacement requested, sent and installed prior to then. Don't want to have "that" conversation with my 87 y.o. Dad. The same one I had 40 years ago with him! And the youngest member of the family, 6 yo granddaughter, is familiar with weed smell as Daddy farms hemp and I had a big ass Sativa on my deck all Summer. What to do? She has very few filters as any 6 year old does.

I had a real quick panic moment and settled in to the "wonder what Home Depot has in stock to help". Fortunately I have one about a twenty minute drive away. They have no inline fans in stock so what to do? My system is 4" just like a bathroom vent so the bulb flashed bright over my head. I now have cobbled together a hanging bathroom fan in my tent ($30 bucks I'd rather have in my pocket) hooked to the preexisting duct work. I have a roll of 12-2 wire and a plug to wire up to so that was quick. It's only 50cfm @ 2 sones so pretty quiet and it does exhaust nicely. For a week or so I hope this gets me through.

While I will definitely send in for a warranty replacement I'm going to look for a 6" system soon. This unit on low is too loud and not "low" enough for marginal smell days and a larger unit on low moves more air quieter or so I'm told.

After my panic and presumed solution I got wondering just what other little mishaps have others survived with a McGyver approach?
 
I have 3 experiences if you're interested. 1 was a typical 6" fan kit that I could not hold in my hands due to the great centrifugal forces when it ran and it was a noisy thing... Immediately went to the expensive but well worth it...CloudLine t-6 and when I needed to get another fan going...No second thoughts about it....another t-6 ..Those are my 3 experiences
 
Started the warranty process...or rather I sent the first e-mail. We shall see but others have had good luck with replacements. Anyway, I'm going to stick with 4" for a few grows as I made a custom basement window exhaust and everything else is 4". However, I did just pull the trigger on the T-4. That will become the primary (duh) and the replacement or whatever will be backup plan.
 
Farmall I'll have this in a few hours and I'm reading up on it to streamline the setup. My hang up is the temp or humidity triggers. I know to get a set point and it will turn on above that. But if it quickly cools or dehumidifies does it short cycle the fan? Then it says: "You may set this trigger below the low temperature trigger to create a range where the fan is active." WTF does that actually mean?

No, it just creates a floor and a ceiling by which the system operates
 
I had to totally empty the tent to get this in place with the extra long carbon scrubber. I'll deal with sensors and settings tomorrow. I needed it quick. It is very quiet. Made me think it wasn't actually moving air so I checked the exhaust vent and there was nice flow. Ten speeds and I'm starting at 5 for tonight.
 
I was using 3 for September and 1 for December and as you said...didn’t know if it was even running it’s so quiet.
 
Time to close this out. I FINALLY installed the sensor. Actually I have it hanging midway between the canopy and the lights.I know my basement is running at 58f and about 45% RH. I've been documenting rh/temp inside the tent every day for several months now. Inside the tent is very near to 45/75 (by day...night is about 62F) with the fan running at a steady #4 or #5 speed setting. I set the sensors to trip on at 75F and 62% humidity. My reasons for those two numbers was just a wild ass guess. I figured if it hits 75 to 77 with a constant fan (at 4) then a default "safe" setting would be #5. I watched the humidity this morning before lights on. It wasn't close to warm enough but the cooler overnight temps raised the humidity to the trip point. I watched it go from 61 -63 and back and forth. I assume it was the fan ramping up and down. After lights on it warmed quickly (and humidity dropped) and it is now cycling around the temp set point. I'll watch it closely for a few days but I think it's a winner. Should reduce on-time for the fan and stabilize the environment in the tent.
 
OlderNOTwiser I have extremely similar results but I did find that during flower, if I don’t have a vent running, the pungent aroma of flower overwhelms the room... in some cases, this might be an issue so I have to set my minimum speed a #1 on my newer t-6 and ‘on’ on the older unit. I hate the fact they are not the same controller but they updated within the yr I bought them. I’m hooked... if I ever build some crazy heat generating electronic, tv/ audio/video thing.... I would look no further to cool it down
 
Four weeks today from the flip. All of these plants are in flower now.Pic is 9 days old. Guess I need to watch the smells, especially in the evening and before lights on in the morning!
