Fox Farms Ocean Forest

I would like to get clarification on what I've heard, off and on, from different people and on different sites or groups regarding Fox Farms Ocean Forest. What I've heard, read and been told is that you can use Ocean Forest by itselt all the way up to early flower with just adding water. Is it really THAT nutrient rich? I have used a 3:1 (happy Frog to Ocean) mix before and added nutes as needed but not straight Ocean. Is there any truth to this? Thank you

I've been under the impression that after 2 months you should start adding but I'm no expert.

I have done exactly that. People will likely have different veg times, so at a 3 week veg, sure, but at a 10 week veg, it would need some food. I usually have found they have enough food for 3-4 weeks. Keep in mind if you transplant to a larger container, that is new fresh soil with unused nutrients, so you can add a little extra time on to the clock before you need to feed.

I use CocoLoco now but used OF for years. I start feeding with their trio schedule at 1/2 strength from day 1 of sprout. They’ve designed it that way. I also add calmag 1tbsp per gallon once I flip to flower just to be safe.

Too many variables involved for blanket time frames. It's generally easy to ascertain when or if any plant needs nutrients.

I recommend you just ask Fox Farm. I had lots of similar questions about their line of nutes when I started with their FFOF and dirty dozen nutes, and they have a great customer service department that will answer all of your nitty gritty nutrient and soil related questions. I found the email from Genevieve, a Product Support Specialist for Fox Farm. Here is the excerpt from our conversation about FFOF along with their FF nutes.

“Ocean Forest Potting Soil can feed your plants on its own for 3-4 weeks. During that time you can consider giving it the 6 tsp Big Bloom feeding as suggested on the Seedlings and Cuttings Feeding as Big Bloom is a very gentle micro-nutrient product that will not risk burning plants. After that 3-4 week period, you can begin the feeding per the directions on the Feeding Schedule at Week 1”

I agree with what everyone else said, to a point. Sure there’s enough nutrients to get you through a few weeks, maybe even to flower if you keep potting up to new soil. My question is, do you want small plants with small buds or do you want to max your grow potential? If that’s the case, use from sprout as prescribed by Fox Farms. Just make sure it’s 1/2 strength. Nothing is worse than fighting deficiencies during your grow and the majority of new growers posting on this forum asking for help are a result of lack of nutrition or ph or a combination of both. The only issue I’ve had in over 10yrs was a couple grows ago because my ph pen stopped working and I didn’t isolate it to be the issue until I couldn’t think of anything else and ordered a new ph pen.

I would’ve had to ask Genevieve to read her companies chartthen get back to me. The term ‘specialist’ has been used very loosely the last 20yrs.

Seems to be pretty tried and true for many people, myself included.

Its great to find a style that works for you, that you are able to get consistent results with. Once you have, if you decide to try a new route, you at least have a good baseline to look at the results with. It will be easy to say, yep this was much better or, oh hey no my yield is trash comparatively.

I've run it straight and with HF. I've always started feeding around wk 3 of veg.

I just talked with Fox Farm again, this time to ask what they recommend if you’re in veg longer than the 4 weeks specified in the feeding schedule I posted. I’m adding FF’s response in case it helps anyone else out there:

“If you are planning on extending vegetative weeks by repeating Week 4 you can do so, however you will want to omit the use of Open Sesame until you are ready to switch your lights to 12/12.”
