HYDRO First grow, need assistance diagnosing

Veruc

New member
Feminized Papaya from Nirvana in a RDWC. Water kept chilled below 70, using hydrogaurd and GH Flora Trio. Room temps are 70-80 and humidity 45-60%. PH of water is kept between 5.6 through 6.5.
Using Kind LED 300 x2, 23" above canopy.
Are these roots just stained? I've not yet ran into root rot so I am not sure what to look for.
Help would be greatly appreciated. Scared for my ladies. ;(

Howdy Veruc, The roots look good, did You mean that the light is 23 inches above the canopy, You indicated 23 feet (23" = inches, 23' = feet)? If so, lower the lights! (LOL). No really, it looks as if there is a mineral deficiency, probably calcium, copper, or magnesium. Go to the "Diagnosis" section and compare the color and spots of Your leaves to the examples. You may need to add a mineral supplement like CALiMAGic to Your feeding routine.
Good luck with Your grow.

Thanks for your input! After reading your input I think I will try to add some CALiMAGic in, since I feel like I have been trying everything else under the sun/lamps.
Thanks again!

What nutrients are you using? What feeding schedule are you using.? Tap water? R/O?

Roots look really good.

Hi Veruc, May I suggest that you give your plants a flush for 48 hours? Everything seems perfect in your setup, but you may have nutrient lockout if you have been overdoing the nutrients.

I had a bout of nute lockout about a month ago, and I flushed the plants over the weekend; the leaves came right back green and healthy. The first dose of nutes after the flush was 25% strength. I truly believe that less is more as far as nutrients are concerned, and I am usually at half the recommended amount of nutes or less.

Using GH Flora Trio, and tap water, starting at 250ish pm (500 scale) in 25 gallons recirculating changed out weekly. Also using hydrogaurd. I picked up a bottle of calmag.

I am considering just that as I am moving on to flowering and would like to get a handle on it. Only problem is it takes about 4-5 days to bubble out the chloramines in my water according to my hydro store and I am not sure I want to flush that long. I too stick to half or below manufacturers suggested levels, I am having some trouble dialing in this strains wants.

Veruc, I never do anything to my water before I add nutes. Maybe your water is different from mine...

You don't have to flush for 5 days, you just want to give it a rest from nutes for 48 hours IF what's bothering your plants is nute lockout.

I have been reading this and that on flushing, and most recently I'm finding myself convinced by the argument that the final flush isn't necessary if you've been flushing all along by giving plants JUST the amt. of nutrient they need. Maybe your plants need 20-25% of recommended amount. I continue to go lower and lower in my amounts and it's a good thing too, cuz I like Advanced Nutrients and they're expensive!

Maybe I was not clear, I am not adding anything to my water before nutes. I have just been told it takes around 4-5 days to bubble out the chloromines. This has been limiting my available change outs to roughly once a week. That is what I meant by I'd have to wait for 4-5 days, but this is a bit of a derp on my part as I could mix nutes in at any time after leeching :/
I think we have landed in the same place with our research on flushing though, I had not planned to do it for the reasons you stated. Unless of course I go and do something like abuse my plants into some sort of problem :P
Is it enough to just remove the chlorine and say chloromines be damned?

I am on my 3rd and 4th grows right now and I have never worried about it cuz to my knowledge, it mhasn't caused a problem. If the spots are getting worse, I would flush them IF they were my plants. If you dont see new spots appearing, perhaps you are ok.

I flushd when I saw my leaves showing more distress day by day. I'm so glad that I figured out that was the problem-- NOT a deficiency, but rather, an overdose.

Well, you are the fourth person that I have come across in my research that does not seem to think that the chlorine/chloromines are a problem. I am beginning to think that the whole thing is not as growing 101 as some of my research/peers make it out to be.
Suppose I am going to head to my garden and drain and fill.
Thanks for taking your time to assist me.
Hope your garden is well :)

Veruc You're welcome, no problem!! In an ideal world, we'd all give our plants rain water, right? But we work with the limitations we have. What's the pH of your water where you live? Mine is nice and soft, and comes out the tap around 5.7. And I use AN Flawless Finish when I flush during the grow. My plants always love 2 days' rest from nutes. And they come back with a vengeance when I put the nutes back in. So try your nutes at !/3 or 1/4 of the recommended.

Just to add: I'm discovereing that my flowering periods are usually longer than what the breeder says, so I'm concluding that I have to learn with each grow to understand what each plant needs according to my environment, which is different from everyone else's. My four hybrids are all doing great right now, never been above half dose nutes, and I'm going to start decreasing the nutes each week, cuz I think I've past the half-way point in flowering.

We have to listen to the plants, connect with them intimately, to better PERCEIVE what it is they need and like. And I think we develop the ability to do that better and better with more experience.

My water comes out at around 7 and at 250-270 ppm. I use GH PH down to get and maintain my levels though my PH generally stays pretty stable.
Its a fun journey learning to produce my own quality medication, I get the feeling most of everone here finds it as rewarding as I do.
Nice to have camaraderie :)

Again what is your feeding schedule. ml/gal It looks like you have nute burn and luckily nute lock.

25gal true ?

I never trust tap water. It varies day to day and may not have balanced minerals in it and adding calmag to it may compound the problem.

Hydroguard is only a preventative that works best under optimal circumstances.

Make it 5. Chlorine isn't a problem. Chloramine can be. What are your chloramine ppms? Hydro shop guys will sell you anything.

Flushing is a damn good idea. Even a 12 hour flush between res changes.

I found out a month and a half into my first grow that my water authority uses monochloramine, so I started this thread to get some feedback. Since my plants were doing well I decided to just keep doing what I was doing (and the plants are still doing very well!). There are some suggestions in that thread about how to neutralize chloramine, you might want to check it out.

My strength is at 5ml per gallon of Micro and Bloom, 2.5ml per gallon of Grow. Once I am done flushing I will probably add nutes back in weaker. Its 25 gallons in a 3 cooler (45 quart each) system, two plants and one test reservoir,

GREAT information!! I looked up my local water info, found out they do use chloramine for disinfectant, so I am going to add ascorbic acid to my water and see if I can determine any difference.

After flushing and refilling with a reduced nutrient solution my girls are looking very happy. First pistils are appearing. Thanks to everyone who contributed and took time out of their day to help. I appreciate it lots. You are all super!
