the extracter fan , has it got to be on all the time or can you turn it of

Off when the tent is open. On when the tent is closed.
Then you do the hokey pokey...

If it is a variable speed model, it can be used to adjust temperatures. When it is very cold out, I adjust mine to minimum speed or off entirely and open the side ports. The temperature difference will result a real good air flow while retaining heat. Similarly, in hot conditions I will run the fan full bore to help with evaporative cooling off my cloth pots. Of course you have to take odor into account.

Don't make my mistake and over-look the size of your tent intake ports - Last few grows I had to leave the tent door open, no big deal but I prefer to not have all the light beaming out - Currently reworking my tent to accommodate a 6" exhaust upgrade with sufficient intake cfms..
