I've been drying my buds sense Sunday. Their in a dark place temp gets no higher than 74 and humidity no higher than 55% and no lower than 50%

My question is why does my buds smell like hay? This happened last year and it didn't turn out how I would have hoped. How do I get the smell back? Everything looks good their not touching each other it stays dark. Not sure what to do.
 
Yes there's air conditioning but does not directly hit the buds at all. Will the smell come back? They hang in this case the door stays cracked enough to get a tiny Breeze but still no light gets in. Stays cool and humidity is right.

You really need to cure the buds for best smell and taste. If you have overdried them then you should start curing them ASAP.
I made an harvest recently and it was the same for me with the smell of hay. After 5 days of curing the smell really dank !
 
As long as you have some air exchange, you will be fine.

It will take longer to dry, but as mentioned the hay smell is normal when the buds are still wet.
I just hung some buds in a well ventilated and circulated tent- 48 hours later they smell like hay.

I'm glad they are not drying too fast, as is the case most seasons.
 
Ok cool glad to know its normal. This is day 3 and their still damp I say two more days and they'll go into jars. I didn't know the smell came back during the cure. Something to look forward to.
 
Yeah man, I think the amount of smell can differ depending on how trimmed your buds are.
I recommend you get a small hygromerer that you can place in the jar to monitor the humidity inside the jar.
Boveda humidipack is also great and make the curing easier.

It sure is something to look forward to! Do you possible have any pictures of the buds you're drying now ? 😁
 
Dr.Moggs here's some pics of the buds that are drying right now.

Do I use the Boveda packs to make sure it stays at 62%? Can I use them regardless. They won't hurt anything?

Looks really nice ! Massive buds !

Yes , the boveda pack makes it stay closer to 62%. If your buds are really wet it can be to much for the boveda pack... however, it helps and it doesn't affect you in any negative way.

If I was in your shoes I would trim more of the sugarleaves before curing or right now. But that a personal thing, some like them more, some less.

Usually the bovedas won't help in the first 2 weeks if you haven't over dried your bud. The hygrometer will be the best and if you have green mj leaves or a big juicy stem you can throw that in the jar to bring back some moisture.. Nice buds and good luck ✌.
 
Question. Do I have to wait till a branch snaps can I put them into jars now their dry to touch just not snapping
 
I would say yes you can. Just make sure to keep track of the humidity in the jars. If your buds still are to wet you will notice this on the humidity and can take the buds out for a few hours :)
 
What I have found works the best is:
Dry them until the stems will break, but there are a few strings.
If you dry until they snap completely, it's too dry.

Also, where you are having drying issues -it would be wise to dry them as much as possible- as too wet buds are difficult to cure properly and easy to grow mold/mildew.
 
Porcha, I don't think they thicken up. But I think they harden up. They're as thick as they will get when you harvest them. My $.02
