Does size matter?

Hey All,

Getting ready to transplant my girls to their final resting spot. I chose to go with 5 gallon fabric pots, but now I'm starting to wonder if I could achieve more out of a bigger pot. Keep in mind that I'm growing outdoors in a green house. I was thinking around the lines of a 20 Gal pot, filled with 20 gallons of kindsoil and coco loco. What do y'all think?
 
I just finished my outdoor grow but the biggest pot i used was like 12 gallon before it started to get root bound and i had to put it in the garden bed. Iv had a 2 month veg do happily in 5 gallons, 4 months requires over 12 gallons though.
 
Well - My thoughts are - First what type are they, if auto's I think 5 gal is plenty. 2nd, How big can they grow in the greenhouse? are they going to 10 feet tall and How long in veg?? I would think the taller and longer you keep them the bigger and bigger pot size you would need?
 
I've seen roots grow through fabric pot in to ground, you prepare a hole UnDer pot, set pot 3 or4 in deep they will grow through easier. Beware of rains flooding hole in the ground. I've also them set small pot into a bigger fabric pot, let roots grow through. My 2 cents.
 
That's more savings on nutes! ;) My 15g are on a 5 day watering schedule. Fabric and plastic too. I keep them few inches off the ground to help the bottoms dry out better, add a fan to move air around them, all good!
 
I've done that last out side grow,I put in small smart pots 3gal. Started inside, dug holes in garden,placed in holes level with ground,and let them root out of smart pots into ground. Looking forward to doing it again with some autos this time ( AK-47s) just my $.02
 
How did the smart pot survive being buried for a few months? The idea sounds great and might be what I do later this spring.
 
if started indoors and green house has dirt floor just cut the bottom off the pot dig a shallow hole for said pot and set it in there and let it grow. if anything the roots will hit the dirt and pot will drain well. put a layer of drainage stone in the bottom of the hole too.
 
These are photo period gals, so we gotta make it until the end of summer. The greenhouse is about 6 feet tall, but I really wanted to utilize some LST techniques, so I can get more sun to ALL potential cola sights. Veg should be around 2 1/2 months or so, but it really depends on when the days start getting shorter.
 
I was planning on keeping the pot above surface on top of a couple of milk trays. Is there an advantage to putting them in the ground?
 
I've always grown in ground. So never had problem with root bound. But if a big ol plant gets root bound in a pot it will suffer some loss at harvest yield.
 
First time outdoors is going to be your chance to see what works, see what problems you are going to deal with. Try couple different pots, maybe couple different soils. I've found grow spots outside each have pros and cons. Light and water is key outside. Beware of any outside lights at night, Any light at night is a NoNo
 
Word. Lights at night have been on my mind for quite some time now. I'm either going to invest in a large tarp or just move them to a pop up tent at night.
