Does it really matter?

Okay! I have a semi-rant and question. Everybody involved in dealing with luxury consumables (wine, whiskey, beer, cigars, weed etc.) are copying the "Wine Snob" approach to describing their products. That is, talking about the "nose", "Taste", "denseness", "aroma" etc. We are seeing this in the description of seeds on websites.

I believe that this is a whole new range of Yuppy consumerism when it comes to weed. I cannot tell the difference in taste or aroma from one strain of weed to another except in terms of harshness and strength. Strength comes from the genetics and the growers attention and a lot of harshness, but not all, comes the lack of proper aging. Buying a strain for the "aroma of citrus with a taste of ripe spring berries and a long finish" is the ultimate BS. Yes, I am not a heathen and can tell the difference between brands of alcoholic beverages, But, believe this is a ridiculous marketing scheme aimed to differentiate products and boost sales to snobs.

Agree or Disagree?

I get a chuckle reading some descriptions too.

But I can tell the difference between each of my plants from the same strain- let alone different strains.
I'm not sayin I could identify a strain by taste lol. (Well Jilly Bean is the strongest, sweetest orange smell & flavor I've had so maybe that one) only that Mango tastes nothing like Thai Skunk to me.

I agree with all the marketing BS.
However, I have one for you to grow and try, Santa Marta Colombian Gold, very pungent old time landrace, tastes like cat piss! (OK I want to knot who tasted the damn cat piss to compare it to!) I have heard it called Mother of Skunk. I can tell this one even with my sinuses all plug up, and I bet you would to.

I've noticed subtle differences amongst different strains. But it's like wine or other alcohols, unless you are drinking some truly wretched shit, it's mostly just subtle differences. Try doing blind taste tests with vodka. I've had Burnett's beat some much more expensive vodkas.
The different smells during flowering? They jump out at you but don't always follow through the cure process.

We're victims, victims, I tell you! Guess where the presidential campaign specialists are going, immediately after the election? It's the Seedsman, ILGM, Nirvana, etc., marketing departments!!!!;)

It is ridiculous! How many different names of weed can they come up with? Where I grew up you basically had three classes of weed; dirt weed, commercial and chronic. That’s exactly what we called it too. When I look for seeds online I see all these crazy names and always end up going with a landrace strain or a variant of.

I will add this though since the post is about taste/smell with all these designer strains. The first auto flower I ever grew was C4 from Fastbuds. Order ya some of that nasty shit if you want something to change your mind lol does NOT taste anything like the description. It smells like black licorice incense and taste like you’d expect it to taste. Strait Sativa head high and it’s potent but whew that stuff is 🤢

I chose Coke, twice, at different Pepsi challenges. Never understood people who drink for the flavor. To me, it's like a difference between piss and bum piss. My drinking days are way over.
's far as weed goes, we're all trying to get our head on.

Haha, don't knock cat piss until you've tried it! Actually I used to use actual cat piss (collected from zoos I think) around my guerrilla patch back in the old days. Kept the deer away. That Santa Marta sounds very tasty! I'm game for that. Bottoms up!

For fun, I like calling the weed I grow and breed "MINE" when asked what it is. If they persist, I say indica dominant MINE! Followed up with "Shut up and smoke", I'll wake you up after your nap!

You guys have bad senses or are obviously not getting terped up enough.

OldManGrower I totally disagree and I think small farmers are fucked without craft cannabis. I can also see, smell, taste and feel the differences.

bboyfromwayback A lot of the time your "landrace" isn't actually a true landrace or you would rarely be happy with all the herms and variations and shit that come from open pollinations. If you're not working with a cultivar of some sort you're going to have to wade through lots of bullshit and begin the long process of working into one so that you have some desirable traits locked in and some sort of uniformity after a few generations before you could use it to farm commercially. Your landrace variants might because they have been bred a few generations (or F1s of stable parents) and your only hope with those is the craft market.

Gingerbeard You chose Coke because you're masochistic. Pepsi is the clear winner.

Pepsi loving Yankee, are you FunkyButtLovin? You'd probably swig down RC Cola and ask for another one. Shasta. Store brands, even. There is a reason Coke is the world's best selling soft drink. I live close enough to the border that I get Mexican Coke. It's made with real sugar. Got me craving a medio litro.

I know you old heads are stuck in your dope smoking ways. For those of you who have never tried live resin, you have no idea what you're missing. Imagine that berry smell you love so much, snaking it's way up your nose and into your brain. Relatively expensive until you realize how much weed it takes to make the stuff and how long it can last. For those of you who can legally give it a go, get yourselves a half gram of something nice and give it a go. I recommend planning on not going anywhere, the first time you do.

I feel like i am somewhere in the middle. I agree some of the descriptions are purely marketing ploys but also know that different strains do have different tastes and aromas. Sour diesel tastes and smells way different than Blue OG for example. That being said some people dont have as sensitive senses of taste or smell and will not see too much of a difference. Really it is all subjective and depends on the individual. So i believe in some of the descriptors but not all. Imo its like saying beige is different from light tan or cream is different from off white. This is also dependent on growing and curing methods as well as genetics. Terp profiles are scientifically proven, although individuals have different sensitivity to them. My dad cant smell the moldy carpet in his bathroom, but that doesnt mean the rest of us cant either (spoiler we can). Also, if you are older, your taste buds and olfactory will not be as sharp as someone in their teens. That is why peoples tastes change over the years. If taste is not important to you then dont pay attention to the descriptions.

I'll also add that i grew two Sour Diesel plants at the same time that tasted different. One had the typical sour d taste and smell and the other had little to no taste at all. Still cant figure out what i did differently other than they were different because they were seeds. Maybe the phenotypes were different and one had little to no taste idk.

Same goes for the nutrients they are trying to sell us with all the gadgetry and the fancy names they use to lure us just look at today's strain's names Whatever happen to the old landraces of the past ? Back in my days weed was weed and we had just a few strains to smoke like Columbian Red, Acapulco Gold, Blue Hawaiian and Thai. There were no cross-breading back then. A sativa was a pure sativa and an indica was hash from the middle east. Go ahead some will agreed and some will not.

Now it's a big BIG big market and we fall for it by buying their so called best products.

Cheers,

FarmBuck :D

GB I agree with you about the coke but you don’t have to be close to the border to get the real sugar coke they sell it in my local store and we’re a hell of a long way from the border. Coke has sort of went to hell since the packaging changed, the old time small 6oz bottles could not be beat and the 16oz old bottles were a close second, all this plastic and cheap ass thin glass just doesn’t cut it.

It is a damn fine beverage Xena . I'll keep calling mine Mexican Coke since that's where it comes from. All they have to do is put a nutrition label on the bottle and they can sell their stuff, here. I prefer Mexican Coke. Thick, head basher bottles. The bottles more bottle rockets prefer to be rocketed from. Caused anarchy in, 'The Gods Must be Crazy.'

Yeah. About the only super cool thing you can do with plastic soda bottles is that Mentos in Diet Coke deal. Never done it myself. I want to freeze Mentos in a column of ice and drop it into the bottle. Plenty of time to put the cap on and blow it to hell. Or a block of ice Mentos in a 5 gallon bucket of DC?
