Defoliating an auto?

Is it safe to defoliate an auto? Im basically going to be doing an oversized micro grow in an old cat carrier (haha) and ill be using lst/bending but i wanted to know if it was a good idea to defoliate as well too, I want to get as big of a yield as I can.
