Decarb extract question

Jason

New member
A friend gave me a bit of very fine pressed extract. I want to decarb in my Lift.
I have a little silicone container to put it in.
My question is, should I close the container or leave it open.
My thought is, to leave it open, so the 02 goes away. I don't know this would happen as readily in a closed container.
Thanks for any insights.

Wasn't the weed for the extract already decarbed before the extraction? That's how it's usually done. Not sure what you mean by "pressed." Extracts are usually in alcohol or oil. (And BTW, it's CO2 that leaves, not O2.)

But to answer your question, if you simply raise the temperature of cannabis up to about the boiling point of water and leave it there for 90 minutes, it should decarb just fine without driving off a lot of the volatile components. A double boiler or an electric oven with good temperature regulation (anything modern) will do the job. No appliances required. Those are my insights. ;) Good luck and have fun.

Hey Doc,
Thank you for the post.
I agree, I would normally decarb, then extract. This stuff is for those folks that vape with rigs, nails, torches, etc. Or put a tiny piece on top of bowl of flower.
I just don't want to smoke it.
I have a Lift, so I just put it in there. turn on, walk off. I went ahead and put it in the silicone container with no lid.

The source uses a 10,000 lb press to extract. No chemicals, no heat. I may have him press all my ABV, post EverClear debris I have sitting around. And some nice freshly cured flower.
I really like the purity compared to what I get. Or maybe just another flavor.

Decarb done. I added a little bit of coconut oil to add volume and help with absorb ability. Will test later.
So I combined about half a gram of gold extract with a piece of coconut oil about the size of small pencil eraser.
Nice golden liquid resulted.

Oh yeah, I forgot about rosin (which is funny because that's what I have been fooling with lately). I guess a 220F squeeze for a minute or two ain't gonna give you much decarboxylation--not an issue when vapin' but now I understand your concern. I wish I had a friend with a 5-ton press!

@DoctorJohnson....How is the DIY Hair straightener rosin press coming along..is it worth the effort? Any more modifications? TIA

Here is a picture of the extract and the silicone container I used to Lift/decarb some with a bit of coconut oil.
The decarb'd version got dark as I left some other stuff I made in their with it. Not much, just enough to discolor.

As this is nearly pure THC, I wasn't about to just gulp it down and my measuring devices are all for larger doses, 5-30 ml.
So I used the flat, back end of a bamboo skewer to put little dots of liquid on my finger tip. 10-15 dots and, rub under tongue.
Test two today. Will report. First test was very interesting. I think the coconut oil helped a lot with absorption, which was very fast.
Two finger tips and I was done. Chased with a vodka/soda, it left a spicy after taste.

And works very well. Just make dots on a finger tip, rub under tongue, repeat as desired.
Effects seemed quick and full body.
The screened hash in a gel cap also works well. Longer to come on, and not as precisely measured. : )

Further tests confirm I like this. I took a gram or so of dried tincture, put in the silicone container, added a small bit of coconut butter, put in Lift and decarb'd.
Dip finger tip into resulting goo. Rub under tongue. And relax. Repeat as desired or needed.
Very mild taste, very fast results.
Forget the dots using a stick. Just dip your finger tip in, and rub into all those fat blood vessels under Le Tongue.
And relax.

Further experiments suggest this could be useful or fun for others. I shared some with friends and some liked it, some not so much. The more medicinal focused friends liked it very much. My more cop a strong buzz friends prefer other delivery methods.
I like it.
The latest test was some rosin and some ultra fine BHO plus coconut oil (vegan, non GMO, room temp storage, low flavor). Put the stuff in a little silicone container, put that in the Lift. This test was about .5 gram of each.
When done, dip pinky finger tip into resulting oil mix and rub under tongue. Low taste, quick results, repeat as desired. I may do one to four dips, depending on what I'm doing.
A friend with chronic anxiety tried a dip. One and done. Loved it. She was able to relax and do some writing. Which is her job.
My buzz friends take four and done. Although they do prefer water pipes, dabs, etc. Strong hits basically.

For anyone interested in graduated sublingual delivery, maybe check this out. Dip that pinky in as needed.
In place of coconut oil, you could use veg. glycerin. I just don't like the sweet taste. Maybe in tea?
The coconut oil I got is effective and zero taste.

I leave the decarb to the Lift. I've done it other ways using the formula (90 for 90) meaning 90 minutes at 90C.
It works, but I like the Lift better.

what i mean is... in order for the rosin to be extracted is heated over 100C to the point it melts, doesnt it decarb in the process?

You could easily be right. I have not heard that rosin is made edible in the making. That would be a great reason to make some.
Both of these purified forms were gifts. So I don't have all the lab details. Note experiences from yesterday.

So, yesterday I tasted the result of the rosin, ultra fine BHO/crumble + coconut oil in Lift.
I suggest all the boys and girls be careful.
Two pinky dips. All's good. Very good. Quick, relaxing, etc. A couple of more dips. All's good.
At some point in that process, maybe 8 dips or so over half an hour or so. Obviously time to chill.
An hour or so later, its clear I should have administered less.
Not unpleasant (yes, I have a high tolerance) but outside what I normally do or wish for.

Lesson learned was that the initial effects are not the FULL effect that comes over time.
So my guess is that elements are absorbed and felt quickly. Other elements still take time.

Advantages are easy to administer, nothing to harm lungs, very clean, administer as needed.
And very mobile as its an oil in a silicone pill box looking thing. Could be put in gel cap if desired.
