Correct amount of N during flower?

I have an outdoor grow in very large pots, 60 gallon. I have made the mistake of having too little N available during flower and have learned the results. How can one tell when the is getting to be too much N at flower. I am not talking about burn but problems from a little too much N. I know what too little does but what does too much N. do to flowers?

Too much N made my sativa's leaves get very dark and curl under. I eliminated the culprit nute. If the leaves stay messed up, photosynthesis won't be at its peak, I assume.

I am asking because I keep reading be very careful of too much N. at flower stage and have given too little because of this. Too little N. makes the plant weak at final stages and buds don't reach full potential..
