Cold hardy plants

I have a plant or few outside in the cold, I did not plant them, they came up on their own. Seeds the chickens didn't find, and I just left them there, this one has been frosted on several times, I am not covering, washing the frost off, it lives or it dies, a test of my Wet Teddy Beers auto, how cold can they go? So far they have survived 18* F with a much heavier frost. This one is in the pot the others are not and have no soil to grow in (dust on a sand rock). I'll post another pic once the frost is off, maybe I can get a clear pic LOL.

Nice, this shows just how tenacious these plants can be. Surviving below freezing temps and still trying to grow on! Makes you wonder what it might be if it were to mature. Very interesting!
 
Fits right in with Nebula's news letter this week. That is one tough little plant. Maybe you have the start of a new strain there- Crystal ice bear.
 
Cool! Are you going to at least protect it from your chickens? It looks like just the sort of thing my girls like to taste.
 
Almost all my chickens were taken by either a coyote or a dozen hawks, I may have taken care of the coyote I just happened to have my .380 in my hand and well, It has not been seen since. They do like those plants around them, and they did peck at the seeds so I fenced, those are my seeds dammit.
 
Sorry to here that. We also had trouble with coyotes until I installed a horse fence on a timer at the entrance to the coop. Comes on at night after everyone has roosted and off before they wake.
 
This one comes in the day time, very predictable when it would be here, it also new I was after it and started staying well out of range of the shotgun. I hope I have seen the last of it. I do lock them in at night, but more for coons and possums.
 
I am sure this is one confused plant, highs near 80 one day and another about 40 with lows in the 50's down into the teens. Humidity ranging from near 0 to near 100% (rain will be coming next week?).
 
dilvish These were not planned, and I am surprised they have lived this long, I mean 18* F with heavy frost! Sunday morn is another we'll hit 20*F, and then we have rain coming.


Just how long can she live uncovered in the cold?
