Can a light leak cause a drop in potency?
How does stress whether it be light leak, heat or cold affect potency?

I haven't heard of light leaks causing potency to drop. The biggest concern with light leaks is the confusion it puts the plants into. Hermies (Hermaphrodites) can occur from light leaks from my research. I think this is especially true if the genetics are prone to herm.

Some forms of stress are known to increase potency. The whole theory behind it being the plant will produce more resin to protect itself from things like UV-B, low humidity, etc.
 
I have often wondered why light leak can adversely affect indoor grows when outdoor grows are subjected to moon light, expecially full moons. I discovered a small light leak in my setup and taking steps to correct. It is small and I am more concerned about odors if I get positive pressure in my enclosure. Am I too casual about small light leak?
 
If the light leak is large enough and long enough the plant may revert back to veg and yes this affects potency big time. It causes a lot of stress and may promote hermies if your genetics have it in them. I have never had this issue but I researched it a lot when Moby Dick CBD would not go into flower? see my thread on "Moby Dick CBD too big Help"
 
Part of the problem is you only need to catch one part of the plant with light to interrupt the dark period. An indicator light could be very dim by the time you're a few inches away, but if it's right next to a single leaf it could be just bright enough to affect the plant's internal clock.
 
Thanks for the replies. I didn't think a light leak would cause a potency drop. Ongoing environmental stress could though, I'm guessing?
genetics is top notch so that can't be it. I am scratching my head on this one.

Just a couple questions, maybe we can figure it out!
  • What type of grow light did you use?
  • What was the temperature and humidity during the grow?
  • How did you dry your buds and what was your temperature/humidity during the drying process?
  • What was your curing process?
  • Did you look at the trichomes before you harvested?
  • Where did you get the seed/clone?

My setup is a 600 watt mh/hps aircooled hood
Temps were 75F day, 70F night
dried buds for 7 days at 60F, then into jars aired everyday for a month.
I harvest when I see the first signs of Amber.
i got my genetics from a reputable place. My outdoors is fine, super potent but indoors I have little potency.
it is definitely due to some stress but for the life of me I don't know what that is.

Dang, it sounds like you're doing everything right! What kind of stress have you seen them experience? Do you have any pics? What do you think was the biggest difference between outdoors/indoors for your plants? I know you probably want to figure it out before you start your next indoor grow! I've never heard of anything like it :(
 
It's a mystery to me too. That run is over. I am now running two true skunk strains, afghan and a white skunk.i need a climate controller to keep the temps in total check. This run I will keep a check on everything I do, temps etc.
If it continues to happen, I will be confused as.
 
Last grow was Harelequin, Public image and GG Allin. Two were high cbd strains for my patients. The GG Allin is a brutal full indica for myself. When I grew that outdoors it was golden. Indoors....nada. If it kills me I am going to find out what the f**** it is.
I take onboard your suggestion to harvest possibly a little later.
 
I've heard of Harlequin, supposed to be good meds. There's a strain called Startonic running around MI right now. It's Darkstar (I think) x Cannatonic. It's supposedly 12% thc and cbd. I tried some and it was fantastic. It didn't have a very potent high, but my back didn't bother me one bit and I slept like a rock that night. My wife bogarted the rest of it. I did buy it specifically for her but I'm a greedy weed whore....

Anyway, that's the last thing I could think of robbing your potency.
