Bug eradicaion?

Any thoughts on this idea? When it warms up enough to put my little hot house to use, bug control! Use a mix of peppermint,cedar, and rosemary in a fogger/humidifier under the plants. Let it drift up under the leaves. May add neem oil /alcohol in vegetation. [25* this morning]:):big-smile:

I assume you are talking about essential oils. Not sure how that would treat your humidifier over time, but it might be okay. Is it a reservoir style humidifier or a drop in nebulizer?

Which bugs are you specifically trying to avoid? Some companion plants would be less intrusive on the aroma and flavor. Basically the same plants you mentioned above. Rosemary, peppermint, thyme, basil, dill, etc. They double as cooking herbs, obviously! Predatory beneficial insects are also an option. I had aphids on my houseplants last year and a few ladybugs eradicated them in less than 24 hrs.

Is there even a need for humidity in the hot house? What is the typical RH outside? You said 25, assuming that's temperature in °F or you'd already be set up and going.
 
I've found that bug infestations are a symptom of a deeper problem. Plants have natural defenses. When bugs swarm a plant it's usually because it isn't healthy and its defenses have been lowered because of it. Fix the plant and the bugs will go away. Better yet keep them healthy and you shouldn't have that problem.
 
I had a bad spider mite problem last yr.I was spraying with neem oil and then alcohol. I was using a spare room then.Late getting started and it got to cold. I'm going t refurbish and set my hot house up as a grow room when it warms up. It's 8'x12'. I'm thinking of using a humidifier with a 1 gal reservoir for bugs . I'll have exhaust fan if to hot or humid. PS; I learned alot last yr. I haven't grown anything in a long time. In doors is new to me.:D:D
 
Collect orb spiders and regular garden spiders from your garden. Put them in your greenhouse. They are your friends when it comes to all little flying and jumping pests. Put them on your plants. It worked really well for me here. I have heard there is a type of leaf hopper that is your friend also and lady bugs too.
 
Yes! Spiders are our friends! Ladybugs? More like lady thugs. They are ruthless murderers of aphids (they are supposed to track and eat spider mites too but I haven't been able to test them). There is also a predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis that will hunt and eat spider mites. From my research, they seem to be more effective than ladybugs because they stay on the plant and don't fly away towards the lights.

I recommend scouring your memory to figure out where you think they might have come from. If you were indoors, most likely there were eggs on the plants from the very start. They have to come from somewhere. They either came on the plants, from another plant (indoor houseplants, etc) or you carried them in from outside on your clothes and shoes. They don't live in homes without plants. Scrutinize every leaf of a clone and ask about the care habits of the grower/dispensary. When I got my clones the bud tender brought them out and showed them to me on the counter. Which is great, to be able to look at but it before purchase, but also makes me think he's taking these plants out of the room and exposing them to people who are coming in from outside from who knows where-- potentially other gardens that could have infestations. Now that you know what the damage and eggs look like you will know immediately if they're okay or not.
 
Thanks everyone, Since I live in a rural area with lots of woods, no telling where they come from. Last yrs grow was indoors only. I know they spread like wildfire but I couldn't spray the whole room. With my small hot house I can spray hell out of it before I start.Lets see how grow #2 works out with what I've learned so far.Hope to start in Mar.:D
 
Try Tanlin drops. I have been battling bugs for a while until I discovered the tanlin. can be used on soil or hydro. One drop treats 100mL of water, Do it once a week for maintence. Can be used in veg of flower.
