Brown root clumps

Hi i have Brown root clumps I am not worried because it's been this way for about 3 weeks. plants are all good growing like crazy. but I was just interested in what causes this I think it's the nutrents but I really don't have any clue.
I am using tap water it has a ppm of 5 and a pH of 7 then after adding nutrients it's ppm is 800 Ish and pH is 6. At change out 7 day cycle the pH is 5.9.

as long as it's not stinky and slimey then it's probably just nutrient colouring.

Hey abad, I don't think it's just discoloring from my own experience. That looks like some root rot (or brown algae: I see it on your air stone as well) to me, and while the plants are growing well now, eventually they won't be. First thing to check: DO YOU HAVE A LIGHT LEAK INTO THE RESERVOIR???


As for the smell, I have had root rot that didn't smell bad, but there was yucky brown stuff coverning my roots. Root rot doesn't necessarily smell bad at first...

Howdy abadtrip, I agree with OzBud, I use GH Floralicious Plus supplement and it does leave a 'stain' on the roots, as long as they smell O.K., and the plant is doing well, just keep a watch on it or add a little H2O2 to the reservoir, to be on the safe side.

There is probably nothing wrong with your roots turning brown unless your reservoir smells bad or you see stuff growing or floating in it. Mine turn brown all the time.

Burny Your roots look great and are one uniform color which looks more light brown than what's on abadtrip's roots.

Definitely brown Algae.

It's more than likely from the clear airline.

I would change to black (you can use drip line) then soak and scrub your air stones, tub, and water pump in 17% h202 solution and rinse very well with water.

Don't forget to keep your roots from drying out. It wouldn't hurt to rinse the roots off with plain tap water.

Then put it all together with out water in it. Place a cell phone in the reservoir with it recording and close the reservoir up. Then​ check the video for light leaks and correct them.

Then add your nutrient solution and include grapefruit extract (1tsp per gallon). Depending how bad it is you might have to change the solution after a couple of days.

Keep an eye on the pH.

What is the reservoir temp. If it's above 68* use a frozen water bottle in the res. It will help kill the algae quicker​.

I d see some brown something on the air stone after looking at the picture better. Looks like algae. Possibly from light leak.

Man, I had a hella time with brown algae on my last grow, and it was because of 2 light leaks. Thank God that lesson is learned.

So the clear lines are acting like fiber optic cables and piping light into my tank thanks mate I got that part worked out.
