Boy or Girl?

This is supposed to be a SEEDSMAN auto lemon. It did not trip by wk 8 so it went to 12/12 on 8/7. Is it just a type of calyx formation, did it herm, is it male? Hep pleeze.

I was going to say that it may be a female, with some stigmas showing from some of the calyces, but, it does appear to be rather 'ballsy' for a female, so I'm going to say its a hermie.

I was thinking hermie also. Its supposed to be a fem auto lemon. I grew another out of this batch and it did fine. First grow actually.
I did top this one and they are very apically dominant. I wonder if that could cause it to herm.

FWIW I topped my Seedsman Lemon auto freebie, no herming just dwarfing. I bought Seedsman Gelato, 3 duds; replacements I've tried starting a fast photo strain, seeds float in a shot glass, I got one with a tail poking out finally in paper towel/ziploc. I bought my wild thai seeds from Seedsman but they're not Seedsman's seeds, it started easily and is growing well so far. My free dispo bag seeds did better than any of Seedsman's.

I paid through the nose for feminized seeds this year (OG Kush, FreakShow, and Raspberry Parfait).Ended up with a number of males from both the Kush and the FreakShow but the Parfait was all female. Got some regular seeds for High Tide CBD strain and 3 out of 3 that I planted were all male. I have better odds when I grow bag seed.

Well that's really awful odds. WTF i've had my share of males auto an photo. No i don't think it was the topping at all Catfish22 it was the seller who sold the seed. But it happens to all of us now really is a pisser when you pay more now for seeds than yester-year. Reg. seeds you know 50/50 chance but if those 10 seeds of reg turn out to be only 2 fems well i'd be bummed out never say another good thing. Lazy careless packagers. Maybe that strain is just crappy?

I got some seed from new420guy, regs, and 100% male, 5 of 5. Paul gave me 3 new seed and I did get females, I told him I was not complaining as it meant someone else got 100% females from their purchase.
Go back to the seller and see IF they stand behind what they sell.

100% agree Budgal, breeder malpractice! Too many stories of feminized or autoflower seeds malfunctioning lately...

On the other hand, I wonder if I'm going overboard in my increasing reluctance to waste my time in growing non-feminized ("normal") seeds at all?

I have a growing collection of interesting seeds that I'm not sure I'll ever germinate due to the disappointment in having my carefully nurtured and trained plants, grown out to a perfect horizontal canopy only to have them finally "identify" as male! Not just hard effort wasted, but there's no joy in yanking a plant you've been baby sitting for six weeks!

Or am I wrong?

Anyways, to address this thread's original question, the attached pics show a healthy Brothers Grimm "Cinderella XX" plant at four weeks from emergence. LST and targeted defoliation is in progress per BU2B PPP method (linked below). The closeups are this plant's "First Show" of sex.

As you might expect, I am making frequent checks on "Her" progress. I say "Her" because the "XX" after Cinderella is supposed to represent double X chromosomes i.e. a Female plant from a feminized seed. For the record, in my book, a "Feminized" seed that goes hermie (without provocation) is no kind of success. Who needs the grief of freak pollen wafting around?

So "I'm peeking under her leaves" daily and speculating on whether "XX" really means Fem or not. At this point, my call is "trending male." My Saintly Spouse firmly calls "male," but I think she is relying on female intuition rather than plant morphology!

I invite comments from my GWE peers. We can all see whether XX means anything to the Brothers Grimm cannabis breeder.

Unless anyone objects, I'll engage in a bit of hijacking and post an update or two here.

"my thoughts are male or a " transgender " LOL"

Thus spaketh the venerable grower SoOrbudgal! And I think she may be right.

PS, BudGal, "LOL" is a little cruel.... I'm in pain here!!! I've already invested a month of parental care on Cindy and now she's decided to transition....? *sheesh*

What I try to do is feminize my own seed, I am pulling out a few seed from a Greasy Grapes (Exotic Genetics) pollinated with a Santa Marta Colombian Gold (mother of skunk) landrace female.
Much of what I see coming from seed banks I call high priced bag seed, and with an auto crossed with a photo the genetics are all over they place, kinda like my Wet Teddy Bears F1 (now in F2). Anyone can take plant a and breed it to plant b to make hybrid c, then start your pheno search.
