Bonzai mothers

Has anyone tried using fabric pots instead of the recommended square posts for growing bonzai mothers?

I don’t have a mother plant but smart pots are all I use and all I’ll ever use unless I decide to try hydro

I have mothers in square plastic pots. The reason they're recommended is because every 6 months you're supposed to cut roots off the edges for new soil and it's easier to cut around a square than it is a circle. I feel like fabric would be way harder to do that with.
