Blue and Red lights

Could you start with color lights even when the plants are young, or will this cause the plant to flower premature?

The color of the lights won't cause your plants to start flowering. It's the light schedules (number of hours of darkness the plant gets each day) which you need to worry about. If your plant is getting more than 18 hours of light a day, it will stay in the vegetative stage. If it is getting short days with 12+ hours of uninterrupted darkness each day, it will start flowering. Hope that helps!

What grow light do you plan on using?

The reason I say this is because of this.
Yellow/Red light - Grow lights with higher amounts of red are often using in the flowering stage to encourage plants to grow tall (stretch) and to help promote budding. Plants may switch to the flowering stage faster under red light than under blue.
Blue light - Grow lights with a higher ratio of blue light are often used in thevegetative stage as they tend to make cannabis plants grow short and squat, with big healthy leaves.

Certain spectra of light are considered better at different stages of the plant's growth, blue being know to promote desired growth traits during the veg stage and red different desired traits during flowering. Sunlight tends to be more blue in the peak summer (veg) months and more red during the fall (flower) due to the angle of the sun and the distance sunlight must travel through the atmosphere at those times of year. Plants have evolved to expect blue/summer and red/fall. But as Nebula says, that doesn't cause the switch to flower.

Okay thanks you guys. So basically different spectra of light promote or encourage different processes in the plants development, but doesn't necessarily trigger a certain response?
