Better choice for 1st plant

I am looking to start growing my first plant. I only want to start with 1 or maybe 2. I like the "CFL Grow for $300 Guide" Not sure if I should start with the Northern Lights, Feminized, Auto, Blue Mystic, Feminized, or Auto. I would like the plant to be on the shorter side while still getting a decent amount. I an 100% new at this and want an easier start. This will be an anniversary present and need help deciding what is the easiest to maintain while being able to keep it in a small area. Thanks for any input!

Would you consider Northern Lights Auto or Blue Mystic Aurora to be a better choice? I saw that both grow relatively short. Are they both about the same in terms of maintenance?
 
Sorry I haven't tried either to help with that choice (I did White Widow auto for my first). But I did want to add that your plant height can be easily manipulated by using training like topping at correct time, and LST (such as spreading sideways the growing points after topping). If you check the final page of my last journal, you'll see what I'm talking about. And good luck with whatever you choose...it's a great thrill to get a first grow going!! 😊
 
Thank you! Very true what your said. I read a little on the sight about training your plants. I just don't want to kill them haha...
 
If you gonna buy some seeds look around for the most easy to grow pest and mold resistant strain. i haven't tried any of this strains but it's definitely gonna help if you are looking for easy
 
I have read on more than 1 site that Northern Lights is one of the easiest to grow. Autos more on the indica side will grow less than 3 feet tall, closer to 2. Even the sativas that are autos don't grow more than 3 feet tall. Haven't heard of the Aurora.
 
For your first plant Hobbies, just keep the foliage underneath trimmed. I have found the autos grow so fast that by the time they are on their 3rd or 4th node the stalk is so thick it would be difficult for a newbie(which I am) to try and bend it without risking breakage. And autos don't like to be topped.
 
I grew AK48 photo-period as my first strain. I have a Blue Mystic Auto in the "ground" right now and I'm going to do a journal on it.

I'd suggest you evaluate your potential grow challenges and choose a first strain according to your specific situation. As 9fingerleafs suggests if your environment is very humid or prone to mold look for a mold resistant strain. If, like me, your environment struggles with high temperatures look for a temp resistant strains etc. etc.

What's your intended grow environment like? Can you guess at what the challenges might be?
 
Welcome, I am on my first grow and am doing 4 Autos DWC....I wanted to do Autos for a quicker turn around.....I would highly recommend Autos....You may never go to a Photoperiod after....Good Luck...

I'm pretty sure I'm getting the Northern.Lights Auto after doing some reading last night. I'm in one of those areas in the world that it can be a blizzard today, sunny tomorrow, and rainstorm the next. I'll have inot the back of my bathroom. I'm taking out some shelving to make room for the plant. All the chemicals and nutrients I plan on getting is all from the list "CFL Grow for $300 Guide " I'm going to try to follow it exact and for tiny tweaks along the way.
 
Welcome to the show,u may not know this but u have fallen in with a good bunch of criminals,a lot of experience here! I have dun w.w. auto before and it's very nice and forgiving for a first grow I recommend it good luck.
 
Canada's Neighbor! United States. I finally bought something. I bought Polar Express Feminized Autos. It is a blend of Northern Lights and Kush. It is suppos3d to be relatively small. Only thing I noticed, it mentioned to maintain the largest kola to get the highest yeilds. No idea how this will go. Wish me luck!
 
Welcome! This is definitely the best site for noobies like us.

Have you decided which medium you're going to grow in? I'm in my first grow, and I'm doing 3 types: DWC, Coco-perlite 70:30, and Soil-Coco-Perlite 50:25:25, and it seems to me that the DWC took time and learning how to set it up, it's also the fastest growing plant by double. Reservoir changes are kind of a pain. Not that difficult, but if you don't enjoy the hobby, it would be a pain. It's most like a machine that you have to leave running.

The two potted plants have been getting hand watered until I can figure out an automatic watering system. They were a lot easier to start, fill the pots, put your plants in them, and keep them fed. The coco-perlite needs watered at least twice daily. The one that I started with some soil mixed in I repotted without the soil mixed in because it seemed to be growing more slowly than the coco-perlite. I may sit the fabric pots right into soil filled pots when they get that big, that way they can get that soil flavor. But these feel like something you can play with for a while, then sit them on the shelf until you're ready to play with them again. Hopefully, your readiness coincides with their needs.

One little project that I have planned is to grow a tiny clone out through flower, then re-veg it and then raise it as a bonsai mother in a tiny soil pot.

In my limited experience, the different media all about the same amount of work, just distributed into the process differently. But each one will have strengths for different applications, like if you want to grow a bunch of little plants, DWC would seem least convenient. Great growth, poor portability.

Whatever you do, have fun and try stuff. Then take pictures and post them here. I love to learn from other people's successes AND failures.
