Infestations caught early on can be controlled by scraping insects off plant surfaces with a dull knife or your fingernail. Alternately, treat light infestations with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, making sure the alcohol contacts the scale insects​
How do you know when scale insects are dead?
Simply flip the scale over and look at it. If it is plum it is probably alive. If it is shriveled or dehydrated then it is dead. There is also the possibility that the female may be dead but there are lots of eggs under her body.​
