Autoflower Pruning... Yay or Nay?

Hey abadtrip, you are VERY correct! The white buckets will let light in, and I can swear by that... This is my first auto grow, but I actually started a different grow about 2 months back. I ended up stopping that grow so I could take those plants out of my tent, so I could get this auto going (better strain choice for my needs). That grow was of 3 different strains in 3 different 5 gallon buckets, and just by sheer dumb luck, all 3 had different light levels.
I had one bucket that I wrapped in foil and then duct tape, so it was completely dark from the bucket (but I forgot about the lid). Then the second one was in a corner of the tent and had regular, silver duct tape wrapped around it (FYI, not good enough to block out light), so 1/2 of it was basically "shaded" in the tent corner... And finally the third bucket was completely white and the light was basically able to flood in from the white bucket sides.
The first bucket had almost no algae...
The second bucket had an algae problem that looked like it was between the first bucket and the third. It was a problem, but it was "save-able".
The third bucket was just "holy $hit" plagued by algae... I actually made another post, asking about my algae problem. I'll try and see if I can figure out how to add a link that will point to that chain... Dunno if I can figure it out when I'm high... Which I currently am! LOL
Anyways, Yes, I have spray painted this bucket. In my other post, I had help from others here. They pointed out my white bucket/light leak issue and told me that spray painting the bucket black, and then white, would block the light and also not attract/retain heat in the water. I have also had to battle heat issues, so the white paint layer was very important. I "highly" recommend this approach for your application! (LMAO I have the giggles right now, and typing "highly" just keeps making me laugh!)

Thanks for the input DAAS, I'm interested to know what your yields are like... Do you have any pictures up? What light and grow setup are you using?
This is Jack Horror AF, so it's a sativa dominant strain. I'm kinda surprised at how short she is staying, so I'm wondering what others are facing. So much is new, and I am DYING to smoke my very own crop!!!!!!! Thanks for the help!

Hey AFN Yes pictures are on 46DayoldNLauto on this site. And I expect to get at least 3 maybe more ozs, and I was using an 89 buck GH300 LED.

I pray at the the alter of the #automechanics. When some of them have pruned, you'd swear a swarm of locusts of Biblical proportion had feasted on their plants. 
I haven't seen any ill effects of defoliation. In fact, it is my morning ritual to sit with my babies with a coffee and scissors in hand. I remove anything that might interfere with growth sites.
Here's a White Widow Auto that seems perfectly content to be trimmed. She's a bit small. But that had nothing to do with her regular haircuts. I had to abandon the garden for a while due to pressing issues out of town. She is also seriously tied down.
Similarily, this N. Lights Auto is doing just fine. I hadn't intended to top this one. But, a slip of the hand while doing LST decided otherwise.:laugh:

Thanks for the post. My leaves are a very dark green, but they aren't any darker than some other plants I've seen on here... I don't know how to tell if I have a nitrogen toxicity, but I'm going to read the post you linked to now... Trying to catch up on this thread and respond to everyone with their help.
As for your root rot question, I have VERY healthy and happy roots. I actually had a terrible algae issue with my last grow (photoperiod, this is my first auto grow), so I corrected the issues that caused all the light leaks. But holy cow are my roots rocking their socks off!!!!!! I'm actually going to take a picture now... I'm ridiculously proud of them, since I had such a bad problem last time around. I'll post another picture that shows the distance of my light... I think I'm about 2 ft away... As far as taking a "natural light" picture, I am in a cramped tent in a cramped closet... so I don't have much maneuverability. I'm taking pictures with flash, so it is helping to get more natural colors from the plant... I'll keep trying.

Wow! Thanks for the follow up. I'm using a Roleadro 400W COB, and I'm pretty happy with it so far. I've been kinda worried about it, since I haven't taken any plant to flower yet (until this AF) with this light... Since this light only cost me $100, I was wondering if it would be loose-nug-generating or if it would be able to perform similar to higher priced lights... Would you mind posting a link to your grow journals or your pics? I've been looking and I haven't been able to find out how to find other people's stuff... I just find where you have commented on different threads... I'm usually high when I'm on here, and I can't figure most stuff out... I've only been able to look at grows that people have added to their signatures, so you see the links underneath every post they make.

Hey Gears, thanks for your info and for posting pics! I really appreciate your help, and you showing me your girls.
My morning ritual includes changing out the bottles of ice in my reservoir, so I keep my water temp below 70 degrees...
I'm actually changing from DWC/Hydroponics to Coco from here on out, so I will have much MUCH better choices when it comes to tie-down points. I'm trying to tie the main stem down in a spiral, but since I'm growing in a 5 gallon pail, I can't tie it down to anything but the lid... And the water changes are too difficult in this setup, plus I don't have anyone I can trust to ask them to care for my plants if I have to leave town for any reason...
Anyways, thanks again for your help. On what you said, you said that you trim anything that is in shade or is getting in the way of your bud sites... But with my plant, I'm still vegging at the moment. So I don't actually know when/where the buds will start growing, so I don't want to trim something that I'll really want to be there later! LOL
Any idea as to what spots I should be trimming or keeping? Again, thanks a LOT for your help. Have a good one!

Also, why does it appear that all of your leaves are either 3 or 5 point? I've been getting 7, 8, and 9 point leaves, and I think (REALLY HOPE!!!) that I have a set of 11 point leaves coming in right now! From my last grow, I only got 7 point leaves... So I'm excited just to see the 9 or 11 point leaves... Just the dork in me I guess.

I just looked at the Nitrogen Toxicity link, and I don't think I have this problem happening. I'm still in the vegetative stage, and I'm not seeing any clawing, cupping, or abnormal yellowing... The leaves that are yellowing at the bottom are that way because I started out at 1/4 strength nutrients to begin with, because I didn't want the seedling to be shocked/killed. I've read from a lot of people and places that autoflowers are even more sensitive to nutrients (when compared to photoperiod plants, which everyone says you should start at half strength and move up from there). So I started at 1/4 strength, had a lot of yellowing, and then moved up to 1/2 of the strength that is specified on the GH feeding schedule from their feed chart generator. I'm going to keep giving the plant 1/2 strength, unless I see anything about the plant to change that...
Anyways, thanks again for the input! I appreciate that you gave me something to look for, so I could rule it out.

Hey there AFN! My Lemon OG Haze was interesting...she started out slow (named her Lazy😊), then she made up for lost time, and produced a great harvest quickly. What was special with her grow was that I topped at 2nd node, she was allowed 4 main branches, then I was able to stick a CFL bulb right into her center, giving great light coverage for all the developing buds. Looking forward to my Jock Horror currently growing outside...hope yours is a success!

To answer your 2nd question first, genetics. All of my plants so far have been 5 point. If you see a 3 pointer in one of my pics, it's either that 2 of the smaller ones aren't obvious or I have cut a couple of them off.
I do try to leave at least one decent sized fan leaf wherever I'm getting new growth. At least until the new growth is big enough to get by on it's own. I'm just guessing when that is. If it isn't blocking light, I leave it be. So far, I don't think I've hurt anything doing this. I may remove just a portion of a leaf if that let's light into the new growth site beside it. New growth = new bud sites. Or at least, potential bud sites.
I'm always looking to let air and light into the plant. As I'm very new to this, I take my lead from people like Green75 LuckyAcres Sonnyhad - The Automechanics. Check out Lucky's video here or Green's video here to see some seriously defoliated plants

Hey AFN sorry but I don't know how to post a link like your talking about I'm a dumb a-s at that kind of tech stuff. But it is on page 2 of the growing community, this one we are on now. Called 46dayoldNLauto, it's with a cheap led light. Hope this helps some ,and good luck with yours.

So for you, you found your biggest trigger for root rot was light leaks? I'm a successful DWC grower, but still struggle with occasional root rot and love to hear what works for other growers! 🌱

Before I would raise the lid to 'fish' out the bottles, letting in enough light to cause the algae to grow.
