How far along is the plant? That’s really the determining factor on weather or not to top? Are thay growing fast or slow? I’ve topped fast growen autos at 3 nodes just my $.02

Yes, topping autos encourages side branching for big side colas instead of a Christmas tree.
The auto I have grown several time shows preflowers at about 21 days.
I usually top node 5 at about 20 days.
Generally, I think it's best to top just as it starts to flower.
