A possible new tutorial topic for Nebula - Partial harvesting of plants

I have one particular plant that has one tall main spike filling out quite nicely with buds. The lower half of the plant has many newer colas with budlets forming.

Question, will I be able to harvest that one main spike when it is ready, and let the rest of the plant finish up, perhaps taking a few more weeks? I tried to search the GWE site for this, but found nothing. I'm going to go take some pictures and will be back in a bit to post them.
 
The crowns usually mature the fastest. I don't really have the luxury of taking weeks to harvest otherwise I'd consider plucking the crowns first and working my way down. Thankfully the harvest window is pretty forgiving with most strains.

Right under your two biggest fan leaves Looks like there is a nice gap. Squeeze it almost flat then bend it over.

Your like...seriously...Yes...I'm serious
 
If you plan on supercropping, it can be pretty intimidating. You can ruin the main cola easily if you're not careful.

The inside of the cola is hollow. You'll want to pinch the cola with your thumb and forefinger until you collapse the hollow part, then gently roll the cola over your thumb by moving your forefinger just above the ruptured section. Your thumb would be at the bottom of the ruptured section. The cola will fold over, in your case, as much as 90 degrees to maintain a more even canopy.

Have some tape ready just in case. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, I wouldn't blame you.

Yup,

I agree sometimes a little bondage goes a long way. Tie her down. Most of my plants become unruly and this is the best fix.

Thanks for the advise. Boy that does sound scary, bending that big main cola as this is my first grow. I trust you all. I'm just the grower, hubby is the toker. I'll discuss it with him.

I'm more of a risk taker than he is, so I'd love to give it a try.
 
I've learned a lot since I started this grow. I did no topping with these girls. It's something I'll do with the new seeds. I really like Neb's article on building a manifold. I would like to experiment with that on my clone as it grows more
 
I just went back and read all the GWE topics on plant training, etc. What you are telling me to do is super cropping and according to the article should have been done in the veg stage. Isn't it too late to do that now.

P.S. I will definitely be utilizing some training techniques with my new seeds.
 
I've had several indoor autos that were topped and produced 5-8 main colas, which after harvesting left some nice colas that got their time in the light and produced a nice second harvest. Good luck with whatever you decide!
 
Thanks to everyone who took time to address my questions. I have decided to let this grow finish out as is.

Nest crop I will be a 'sophomore" and will apply many things that I have learned in my 'freshman' crop.
 
Totally agree with you Doc. I would leave her be. From looking at the plant, Supercropping should have occurred about 4 weeks ago. No disrespect.
 
First of all harvesting the main cola when it is ripe and then letting the others ripen is what I would do.

I supercropped 5 weeks into flower!

The plant I am growing now got too tall for the tent and I had no choice other than supercropping. The stems were too brittle for bending and tying. It was really scary but none of them snapped off. I did have one that the outside of the stem tore open a little so I tapped it up using grafting tape (a stretchy wax tape designed to seal a graft). It worked out just fine. A lot of instructions just say to use duct tape but I already had the grafting tape from grafting heirloom tomatoes to nematode resistant rootstock. The trick to supercropping is to crush the inside of the stem a little bit longer than the width of your thumb and then just bend it over to a 90 degree angle. Have a way to hold it up before you start in case the weight of the cola is too heavy and it wants to fall past 90 degrees.

We've all been there.
I was surprised by just how lanky a Jack Herer cross could be and was unprepared. I used a half measure and threw a net over her. Well, she kept stretching and two of the colas got constricted in the net and damaged. Next time, I would squash and bend the tops horizontal. Hopefully I won't have to, now I know what to expect.

Yes, it's completely normal for the plant to be at different stages in different parts. For some plants the lower buds mature first, and sometimes the upper buds are the ones first ready to harvest. It's completely okay to harvest the plant in parts and let the remaining buds continue fattening up!
