4X4 Rockwool cube

It's my first time using Rockwool as a growing medium. Instead of leaving the paper around the outside of the cube-like it is recommended I ripped it off completely. Now I'm starting to see roots coming out the sides where the paper would have stopped them forcing the roots to go down. I don't want roots everywhere and in the future, I will leave the paper on but I'm considering using duct tape around the sides of the cube. I don't know if there is any precedent with this but I would like your thoughts on what I should do if any and how I should proceed before roots start coming from every direction. Is the duct tapes glue toxic?

I think the only negative to removing the wrapper would be that the cube might be more prone to disintegrating. The roots will air prune, so I wouldn't worry about that. I use the 4x4 cubes to keep my mothers and they work well.
