1st timer looking for advice.

Hello I am starting my very first grow and I have a couple questions, more so just want to be assured I'm doing it right lol. I have a 4x8x7 tent, 600watt hid (plan on using throughout veg/flower), small fan on the floor and box fan hung up by the top of the tent so there's constant airflow through the top of the tent as well. The temp is a consistent 80-90 degrees but tends to stay toward the lower end. The humidity is always about 30-40%. I'm using coco coir and since I'm still within the first 2 weeks I've just been using plain ph'd water. Tried to germinate 7 and 4 of em have sprouted (2 are slow to fully break off the shell but growing). Right now my biggest concern is the coco coir drying out fast and needing to water them everyday as the light is about 2 feet above the plants. I just want to make sure that is an appropriate distance for the light and that I'm not watering them too much (which I don't believe I am).

Not yet, was going to install an exhaust within next couple weeks. So just circulation right now but I have left some of the closable holes on the side and top of the tent open so that air can escape. Sorry 1 pic is a duplicate.

Ive never done coco but i would be concerned with the heat and lack of ventilation system. I was under the impression ideal temps were 70-80 and getting fresh cool air was important but im fairly new to growing myself.
 
I was thinking it might be a little too hot too but I mean luckily they're growing. I'm gonna try to work on the ventilation more this weekend.
 
It is a little warm, fresh circulating air is very important. At this point with that big of a tent, and those small plants, there will be enough CO2 for now, but I recommend at least an exhaust fan,up high and an opening near the bottom to allow air in, this will also help with the temp.
 
Thanks, gonna work on adding one in. Once the temp lowers the coco should retain the water a bit better right?
 
NebulaHaze what do you think? How can I help the coco to retain water longer than it is currently? Or is it normal to have to water often using coco coir?
 
Coco normally holds water very well. If it's drying out fast it's likely either because it's too hot, too dry, too breezy or the container is too small. Getting the temperature consistently below 85°F will help, but if you're needing to water everyday you should probably transplant them to bigger containers. It's possible your seedlings are just drinking a lot!
 
Thanks for the reply! Yea I'm thinking it's just the heat/very dry thing. I'm going to have to work on getting some fresh cool air intake and adding a humidifier as well to boost that a bit since it's always about 20-40%.
 
Cannabis plants are pretty resilient and could handle high temperatures from time to time as long as they have ventilation and the soil doesn't dry out.. You should be fine. Dealing with heat waves here in California I deal with this often .Also I would increase the humidity just a tad.
 
Thanks man! Appreciate it, yea so that cold air intake is going to be important if I increase humidity. I've noticed they're pretty resilient, I've got 1 that I thought died while the tap root was out because it was having trouble going into the rapid rooter and hadn't made progress in a day or 2 since the shell was "stuck." I unstuck the shell and it took within a day or 2! Funny thing now though is the root is growing into the coir like a coil.
 
No I just found out about those yesterday. Going to look into it but my thought process with getting such a big tent was that I could possibly put up something about 1/4 of the way in to have a veg area and then on the other side taking up about 3/4 of the tent a flowering side. Honestly think the hydro store clerk may have sold me on it too well lol because once I put it together I thought "holy sh!t this is huge!" Lol. May have bit off a bit more than I thought I could handle in terms of tent size but I think I could make it work. For this first grow I'm just focusing on 5 plants though, ill worry about trying to separate the tent on my next try.
 
If you've got autos then separating the sides will be easy as you won't have to worry about light leaks from the veg side into the flower side. If you're growing photos you'll need no light leaks at all. From my knowledge a 600W is good for a maximum of about 4x4 so You'd either need two 600W or a 3-4ft light mover rail for that size tent to be lit effectively.
 
Yea and I'm already thinking it's gonna be a pain to try to make sure there's no light leakage. Thanks, I think I might try to make it 5x4 then to see if that'll preven me from needing a light rail. None are autos, right now it's bagseed from what was supposedly Train Wreck but I ordered fems off Seedsman.
 
Guys, another quick question. What type of timer do you use for a 600 watt HPS light? It seems all the ones at Walmart that would work for other things can't handle that wattage light and ballast.
