so if I switched them to 12/12 on the 5th of July how long should it be tell i see nugs start to form

You should see signs of flowering about 10 days after switching- with buds forming about 2wks later has been my limited experience.

Yeah, this things do what they want to do and they really don't care about what you want. Just be patient and it will come. Try a hit of newly dried stuff and then a hit of two week aged weed. The difference will e night and day.
