I've used cheap 2 gal black plastic pots for autos and got half a pound from two plants under a 600W in coco with no added perlite. Pretty root bound, roots circling pot with no visible coco around the edges but didn't run into any problems.
I went to my local hydro shop today to get some pots. The first time I went was on a Monday. The owner was there. He seemed disinterested and frankly, not that knowledgable. I returned the next day to get something I had forgotten. The fellow working that day was great. He is a grower and knows his products.
So, I waited until today (Tuesday) hoping to avoid the owner. No such luck. I had a pot in my hand that is smaller than the ones beside it. But, it seems big to me. " Is this a 3 gallon ":asks I? "Yes" :says he. " I thought it would be smaller": says I. "Nope. That's it" :says he. All the way home I'm thinking something just ain't right. I really thought it would be smaller
I had to wait about 4 hours until after the babies nap time turn the lights on in the nursery to check. Sure, enough, it is a 5 gallon. The bigger ones must have been 7 gal. You would like to think a guy who has owned a hydro shop for many years would know the difference between a 5 and a 3 gal pot. I do. Well, I do now.
The guy I wanted to see is in tomorrow. Guess I'll pick them up then. <sigh>
