Sexing Regular Seeds

I have been growing since 2019. I have yet to grow out any regular seeds. I'm wanting to grow some landrace Thai sativas that are only available in regular seeds. I've looked at past threads on the forum but haven't seen what I'm looking for. If I want to grow out two female plants how many seeds should I sprout? AI says six. Do I simply wait until the plants show sex and then cull? I will want to manifold these plants and finish them in the autopot system in 5 gallon cloth pots. I'm trying to figure out that timing and how to pot up the plants. I read that there is a service that can/will sex the plant from a sample sent to a lab after the plant has grown three weeks from seed. That would help with the timing. Has anyone tried that? It may be cost prohibitive, IDK.

You can definitely have a lab sex test for you. It can be done as soon as you can clip a small leaf from the seedling. It’s the way to go if you can access the service for a fair price.
I trust these guys (I use their soil mix), here is the option they supply although it’s sold out maybe you can find elsewhere. I think there are other options too for you guys in the states.

Otherwise you’re really stuck waiting for plant to show. I figure that means you’d have to get through veg which is a lot of work and cost to cull plants. Also seeds should be about 50/50, nature isn’t stupid , however math is, so it doesn't mean 4 seeds get you two females. You could plant 10 and get none in theory. I was lucky the one time I did regs I got 4 out of 4 but I figure that means I’m forever cursed now, lol.

You can also force them to flower early show sex, then switch back to veg but that seems dicey to me.

It’s also possible to grow a plant to a size you can take a clone , root it, flip it, and see what sex it is. it will be the same as the mother.
All of these take a lot of time, etc. so back to lab testing

I’d like to grow some regs too but I have no space so until I can get an affordable sex test that project will have to wait.
Keep us updated on what you do @golfnrl

Kids these days are spoiled with their Auto-Fem, DNA - ing….. back in my day when we walked to school , in snow , both ways, up hill…. Wait , what was I saying.

I’ve grown lots of regulars, that’s where the good genetics are. Females will show at eight weeks in veg as long as you have time space and patience. Males typically showed nothing by 12 weeks.

You could jump through lots of hoops, reverting, DNA or just make a little veg spot Let them chill.

Hi, group!
Certainly good food for thought and a variety of opinions. Here's my two cents.

Since grow one, I have made my own seeds, starting from fem'd landrace sativas (Malawi Gold and Durban Poison). I'd take a longer view past the very first Thai grow and:
- Plant four seeds. Probability of one female = 75%. Two = 50%.
- Make female pollen on a couple of lower branches, cover with Saran Wrap when close (before) to opening to avoid seeding the entire grow.
-Harvest pollen and dust on selective buds outside the grow area. Let seeded buds mature.

This saves you the cost of DNA testing. You have to grow out the seeds to cull the males. Why not do it once? If you like the smoke (I am intrigued. Remember Thai stick from the Viet Nam days?), you'll have plenty of fem'd photo seeds for your next grow.

I remember Thai stick. That’s the only time I was too stoned to drive. My profile pic is a wild Thai from World of Seeds, a ten footer with a trunk 5” thick.

I do agree with @Mr.furley regs are the place for the good genetics and obviously phenohunting, and I would like to run more. However with only 1 3x3 space my options are limited. So for me I just have fun popping different things all the time generally fems
